Quinta do Infantado Douro Tinto is a bold yet balanced red blend from Portugal’s Douro Valley, made from traditional native varieties like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, and Tinta Roriz. Fermented with indigenous yeasts and bottled with minimal intervention, it shows ripe blackberry and plum notes accented by dried herbs, spice, and a touch of schist-driven minerality. Medium-bodied with polished tannins, it’s a soulful expression of the Douro’s dry wine potential.

This lighter-styled and nimble Chard brings aromas of lemon peel, white flowers and tangerine on the nose, giving way to flavors of pear, river rocks, spice and orange blossom on the palate and finish.

75% native red varieties/25% white varieties. From a single hectare of 40-year-old vines, a field blend of red and white varieties, planted at almost 2000 feet in elevation on a schistous, north-facing hillside in the Douro. The bunches are co-harvested by hand and partly destemmed. The mix of berries and whole clusters macerates just long enough to take on a clear, pale red color. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tank, where the wine is also aged on its fine lees for 11 months, followed by a year in bottle. Having little exposure to air, the wine has a natural, very gentle, desirable spritz to it just upon opening. “Palhete” is Portuguese for the British term “claret” (from the French “clairet” originally), historically applied to the very pale, not-quite-red wines of Bordeaux wines way back in the 14th-15th centuries (only later did claret come to indicate the bigger, truly red, more modern style of Bordeaux red). In the bottle, Palhete references this fresh, very light style of wine, in Portugal’s case achieved through a co-fermentation and short maceration of white and red varieties.

The palate is tender and refined, medium- to full-bodied, with supple, chalky tannins and a delicate yet substantial thread of dark fruit. A beautifully pure and energetic expression of baga. Sourced from three vineyards, 100 to 140 years old, planted on clay-limestone soils. The grapes are partially destemmed, fermented in open wood lagares, and aged 12 to 18 months in 500- and 1,500-liter used oak barrels. From biodynamically grown grapes, Demeter and Ecocert certified. Drink now or hold.

Can be a bit reductive when first opened. Cool and elegant aromas of lemon rind, white orchard fruit and petrol lead to moderately dense and nicely rich middleweight flavors that display good length on the balanced finale that is supported by citrus-tinged acidity.

Ripe with cherry, this is juicy and pure, showing accents of earth and leafy underbrush. Winds down leisurely, with balance, a firm edge and fine length. Drink now through 2028.

Straw-yellow color with greenish highlights and a fine, persistent sparkle. The aroma is very distinctive and elegant, with clear fruity notes of apple and white-fleshed fruits. On the palate, it is creamy, with a pleasantly tangy and fruity aftertaste that mirrors the scents detected on the nose. The 2023 La Llorona is the fourth vintage of this Godello from a 38-year-old vineyard on sandy soils in the hamlet of Pieros, an elevated zone of the valley at some 500 meters above sea level. It's very sharp—the yields for Godello were very low in 2023, and the wines are concentrated; the grapes ripened early but kept a lot of acidity and salinity. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in barrels of different sizes, from 225 to 1,000 liters for 10 months. This only underwent partial malolactic and was bottled at 13.5% alcohol with a pH of 2.77 (!) and 6.2 grams of acidity. It is vibrant, with electricity, a fine thread and a super long and vibrant finish. It made me think of a Savagnin from Jura. 7,351 bottles produced. Drink: 2025-2033.

Black cherry, black truffle and bark. Fresh earth and pine cone. It’s medium-bodied with extremely integrated tannins that are so vivid and so pure, like essence of Sangiovese. Strength with balance. Best in three to four years.

The 2021 Le Pergole Torte is a real stunner. Rich, deep and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2021 is captivating from the very first taste. In bottle, this is quite a bit more reticent than it was as a barrel sample, which, in my view, is a positive. Even so, readers should be prepared to cellar the 2021 for a number of years at a minimum

Beautifully saturated and rich in terms of complexity (but not in extraction), the Montevertine 2021 Le Pergole Torte remains focused and elegantly streamlined with a very bright-red cherry element that defines this classic vintage. There are tart fruit flavors to close, followed by firm but silky tannins. A hint of the skins also comes through on the bouquet and adds a little more weight and substance. This wine (which is worked in cement vats, oak cask and Allier barrique) finishes with polished slate-like mineral nuances.

Tasted as a barrel sample, the 2015 Le Pergole Torte is a 100% expression of Sangiovese sourced from the estate's oldest vines (between 30 and 50 years old). Like the other wines from Montevertine, Le Pergole Torte sees both its alcoholic and malolactic fermentations in cement, and the wine later ages in new oak barrels for 12 to 18 months depending on the vintage. After that first phase in barrique, it goes into large botte to complete its integration. This gorgeous vintage opens to a deep, dark appearance with a velvety presentation of dark fruit and black cherry flavors. The wine's textural richness is ultimately what sets this fantastic vintage apart.

The 2015 Le Pergole Torte is explosive and powerful while showing a remarkable level of precision. Pliant and beautifully resonant, it captures all the best qualities of the year. The oak still needs time to fully assimilate. Even so, the wine's pedigree and potential are very much in evidence today. In a word: superb.

Dark ruby-colored with a garnet rim, it displays a lovely nose of Asian spices, incense, tobacco, balsamic, and blackberry. On the palate it has exceptional depth, layers of spicy black fruit, excellent ripeness, and an elegant personality. Upon release it should continue to evolve for another 5-6 years and drink well through 2040.

The Bodega was formed in 1890 as a partnership of 5 quality-conscious growers keen to exploit the export potential for well-made, ‘modern’ Rioja. At this time, French vineyards were ravaged by phylloxera, and connoisseurs were having to look elsewhere for supplies of fine wine. Rioja, with its excellent climate and soils, had already attracted attention, and experiments with Bordeaux-style vinification and barrique-aging were proving very successful. The region’s only real disadvantage was its remoteness, cut off from the lucrative markets to the north by the same mountains that ensured its favorable climate. This problem was solved by construction of the rail link to Bilbao, and it is no coincidence that Bodegas La Rioja Alta was established next to the Haro railway station in the same year it opened. In 1904, La Rioja Alta absorbed Bodegas Ardanza, and gained access to some of the finest vineyards in the Rioja Alta district. The luxury 904 bottling commemorates this important milestone in the company’s development. Since then Rioja has seen more bad times than good, and many producers have harmed the reputation of the region and its production methods, releasing sloppily-aged wines which were never good enough to support a long time in cask. But La Rioja Alta has never let standards slip, and continues to this day the tradition of careful long-aging that gives Rioja its unique character. These wines offer a wonderfully complex bouquet, rich flavours, a seductively smooth texture, and are all ready to drink on release.

Few dispute that La Rioja Alta S.A. is the leading quality orientated producer in the Rioja. With more than 50,000 casks and 6.4 million bottles stored at any one time, the equivalent of about 8 years sales, La Rioja Alta S.A. is unique in its ability to supply large quantities of fully mature wines of world class quality. The company owns 300 hectares of vineyards in different parts of the best zones of the Rioja Alta region. La Rioja Alta S.A. is specialized in red wines. The leading grape variety is the Tempranillo with small doses of Mazuelo and Graciano. The Vina Ardanza differs from the other wines with some 25% Garnacha in the blend. After vinification in the new ultra modern vinification plant near Haro, aging is in traditional Bordeaux casks, all made from American oak. Racking is by hand every 6 months with 8 teams working full time racking the 51,000 casks. There is no filtration prior to bottling and further long aging in bottle before release. In short the wines are made in the traditional Rioja manner. The company is adamant about not using French oak, keeping the unique Rioja style which has been developed since the end of the 19th century. In spite of the varying amount of time in cask and bottle the wines all display a wonderful rich ruby colour, gorgeous aromas of oak, spices and fruit followed by a sensational feel on the palate, with a wonderful smooth texture, clean rich oaky/fruity flavours and a long lingering finish. All the wines are ready for consumption on release but will keep for many more years in bottle. This situation is almost unique in the world of wine and is the reason why so many restaurants list La Rioja Alta’s outstanding range of truly classic Rioja wines.

A rich swath of crème de cassis, blackberry paste, mocha and licorice is counterpointed by a savory range of bay leaf, fresh earth and iron accents in this stately red. Fresh, with sculpted tannins and fine detail and focus through the long, creamy finish. Drink now through 2039.

Aromas of red cherry, forest floor, licorice, coffee and hints . It is light bodied and bright with acidity. The prominent fruit and herbaceous notes are rounded out with nicely integrated tannins. The freshness shows its Atlantic character. 11.5% abv

Espadeiro planted between 1890-1920 in granite soil. Hand-harvested and destemmed prior to a spontaneous fermentation in open-top stainless steel vessels. Pressed and racked evenly between French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks for 11 months of maturation. Gentle filtration occurs prior to bottling.

The NV Extra Brut Sous Bois (base 2018) is a major step up from the 2017. Then again, this vintage was much more favorable. Aromatic, bright and sculpted, the 2018 is so complete. Silky contours and well-judged oak give the 2018 a great deal of finesse to compliment dried orchard fruit and floral nuances. In this release, the Sous Bois is 63% 2018 and 37% reserve wines.
