The 2020 Langhe Rosso is mostly from young vines in Pira, which in this case means vines under 30 years of age. Sweet floral overtones meld into a core of dried red cherry fruit, cedar, pipe tobacco, mint and crushed flowers. Deceptively light in body, the Langhe Rosso offers lovely tension and energy. This is a relatively open-knit style for Roagna and a fabulous introduction to the house style...This is a magnificent set of new releases from Luca Roagna. The wines are perhaps a touch more open than they can be in more austere years, and yet they offer tons of classicism. Roagna gave the 2020 Barbarescos and Barolos a whopping 60 days on the skins, with spontaneous primary and secondary fermentations. The wines were aged for about 2.5 years in cask and then cement. Because of some practical considerations, the 2020s were bottled about a month later than normal. The Roagna Barolos and Barbarescos can seem a bit ethereal in the early going, but they often fill out with time in bottle. The wines also respond quite well to air, so I would not be afraid to open them in advance. - Vinous
