PURPLE HEART OUTSTANDING TOP VALUE
There is fine Chablis typicity suffusing the aromas of apple, citrus confit and a whiff of quinine. There is very good mid-palate density to the solidly concentrated middle weight flavors that possess both a beguiling texture and evident minerality on the moderately firm, balanced and youthfully austere finish. A quality villages...Didier Picq, who with his brother Pascal, manages this 14.3 ha domaine, noted that the 2024 growing season "was seriously complicated, especially because of the constant treatments necessary to fight the mildew, but the hail cost us on the order of 45% of the potential crop. The season itself reminded me somewhat of 2021 but with no rot so I suppose there's that. We picked between the 19th and 27th of September and yields ranged from 25 to 45 hl/ha with an average of 35 hl/ha. Potential alcohols were perfectly good but certainly not high as they came in between 11.5 to 12% so I chaptalized about .5%. Both fermentations were easy as the lees were clean and the yeasts made quick work of the moderate sugars. Acidities were healthy, though again not high, yet the malos finished relatively quickly as well. As to the style, 2024 is completely classic, even old school but without the sometimes drying acidities of those vintages. I love this vintage as the wines have excellent terroir transparency and they have so much energy that they're already fun to drink. The Picq brothers have once again fashioned excellent wines and I warmly commend them to your attention. Note that the house style is ultra-pure with no wood, and I can vouch from personal experience that the wines age extremely well. Lastly, I had the chance to review two now in-bottle wines from 2023, both of which are lovely. - Allen Meadows
Originating from the usual parcels and raised entirely in stainless steel, it has a brisk nose with Granny Smiths, lime and wet stone. Classic Chablis. The palate is well-balanced, with a bitter lemon entry lending tension. Taut and linear, it delivers a refreshing, spicy finish that lingers in the mouth. Very fine.
