Domaine Pelle Menetou Salon Morogues Blanc 2024

100% Suvignon Blanc. Once regarded as the Loire Valley's most off-the-beaten path appellation, Menetou-Salon has gained a fair amount of recognition thanks to Domaine Pelle, which accounts for 25% of the AOC's entire production. This small appellation is located just south of the Sancerre region, and includes several villages. The Pelle vineyards are located in and around the village of Morogues, and they are the best known, highest-quality producer from the appellation. The soil is very similar to that of Sancerre-clay and chalk, and thus the wines can easily be mistaken. While the family business started as a hobby at the beginning of the 20th century, today Domaine Pelle is the benchmark producer by which all others in the AOC are judged. This Morogues Blanc is their entry-level bottling, and it offers classic notes of citrus and minerality on the nose, which lead into a medium-rich body with some melon and exotic fruit flavors, crisp acidity and good length. Compares quite favorably to a top-notch Sancerre at a much lower price!

Fourth-generation Paul-Henry Pellé organically farms 40 hectares of vines in the kimmeridgian-centric village of Morogues in the appellaton of Menetou-Salon. The property is planted to 1/3 Pinot Noir and 2/3 Sauvignon Blanc, both of which thrive in these lauded soils. The fermentations for the Menetou Morogues occur primarily in tank with about 15% in a combination of foudres and 400-liter barrels. The esteemed parcellaire cuvées are fermented and aged in a combo of tank (30%) and 400-liter barrels (70%) that are housed in a cold and serene 13th century underground cellar. Like the top wines from Chavignol, Pellé wines drink well on release, but also have the power and precision to age beautifully for 10-15 years, often longer in top vintages.
