Mas des Capitelles’ workhorse Vieilles Vignes is built on the backs of Mourvèdre (50%) and Carignan (25%) from vines up to 80 years old, with Syrah (25%) completing the blend. After a 30-day maceration with a small proportion of semi-carbonic whole clusters in the fermentation, one-fifth of the cuvée was aged in oak and four-fifths in fiberglass and enamel vats, with bottling taking place after 14 months. An exuberant nose of blueberries, violets, and warm dust evokes the sun-scorched slopes of the appellation in visceral fashion, and the palate sizzles with an almost spiky minerality, framed by rich but firm blue and black fruits. The balance of refinement and wildness here is extraordinary, with neither trait calling too much attention to itself.
Mas des Capitelles began in 1999, when ninth-generation vigneron Jean Laugé began bottling his own wine after a lengthy stint at the local co-operative, where his father's a driving force in the creation of the Faugères appellation in the early 1980's had served as president.

So you hear it bandied about: ?€?There are thousands of native grape varieties in Italy!?€? That?€?s true, but a lot of them are merely cute. The most serious native variety Timorasso deserves another category (and it?€?s white to boot). It?€?s utterly unique, complex, capable of aging, and transparent to where it?€?s grown. Walter Massa is the contadino straordinario who brought the grape back to life in the early 1980s. He remains the leading producer and go-to grower for Timorasso.
For Timorasso as a variety: It?€?s native and unique to the Colli Tortonesi (southeast Piemonte). Before 1980s, most growers were ripping out Timorasso and planting Cortese, as the latter produces more and Gavi was all the rage, so they could sell the grapes easily. Timorasso is one of those grapes (unlike, say, Cortese) that really is delicious and refreshing to eat right off the vine, due to its high sugar content and acidity. When Timorasso is vinified, you get lots of complexity and structure (from alcohol and from tannins ?€? skin contact and thick skins!). Yet there?€?s plenty of acidity to keep things fresh and a definite counterpoint of what we call ?€?honeyed minerality.?€? When Timorasso is young, it can be really tight. As it ages, it loses some of its baby fat, and riesling-ish, petrol-like notes emerge. The 2022 Tinto Selvanevada is 75% Tempranillo, 19% Graciano, 3% Garnacha and 3% Mazuelo from the Ebro riverbank vineyard in Laserna, Laguardia, Rioja Alavesa. Aged for seven months in oak barrels, this garnet red wine features blackberry and elder along with wild herbs and a liqueur-like touch. Dry and grippy on the palate, it is intense with reactive tannins, lingering long on its fruit notes. This is a rich wine to hold for a couple of years.
