Brothers Julian and Sebastian were raised in the wine country of southern Germany, but moved to California after finishing school, and have been making wine together there since 2015. Working with some ancient vines (the Mataro & Carignan vines were planted in 1893!), they have quickly developed a dedicated following. This “red blend” is a festival of red berries, pomegranate, plum, mint and lilacs: bright and juicy with some chalky, dark tannins for structure.

100% Touriga Naçional. Sustainably grown vines on average 30 years old .Tended in schist rocky soil at 300-400 m (984 -1,312 ft) elevation. 30 day maceration with spontaneous wild yeast fermentation. Cold stabilized, and racked to stainless steel for 3 months. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Dark purple. On the nose, fresh boysenberry, blackberry, plum and blueberry are commingled with a ferrous mineral note and wild notes of beef blood, anise and rose petals. On the palate, intense and lush, but light on its feet. The blue and black fruit are framed beautifully by fresh flowers and slate-tinged mineral. Finishes long, with a whiff of white pepper.
This is an expression of Portugal’s most well-known grape, Touriga Naçional, that manages to be both evocative of the terroir of the Alentejo and a uniquely fresh take on the “king of Portugal.” Carbonic maceration and careful attention to maintenance of acidity give this wine a beautiful duality of ripe fruit paired with floral and even juicy citrus notes. An excellent red wine for white wine lovers.

A vineyard selection of Otskhanuri Sapere (oh-sah-kh-ah-noo-ree sah-pear-eh) made by the young woman winemaker Gvantsa Abuladze, sister of Baia Abuladze and brother Giorgi Abuladze. This rare and difficult to say variety is sourced from their estate in the village of Obcha. All red varietals grown in Imereti are higher acid, lower sugar grapes due to the humidity of the region. Otskhanuri Sapere is especially known for its ridiculously dark color. The grape is notoriously hard to work with since it is difficult to get the necessary sugar levels. 2019 was a typical year so this was the last grape they picked in the second week of November. All the fruit is estate grown, hand picked and hand sorted. After destemming the wine is pressed and put into qvevri with skins and fermentation starts spontaneously. Once fermentation is completed the skins are removed and the wine is aged in qvevri.

"This "crazy value" Napa Cab was sourced from a couple of top "Cult" wineries in the Valley (SHHH...their wines sell for between $75-150/bot!). Deep, rich and plush with classic Napa Cab fruit, it drinks like a wine costing 2-3 times as much! The Hardin Cabernet Sauvignon is a combination of top valley floor and hillside sites, it's a blend of 98 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2 Cabernet Franc aged in French oak (20 new) for about 22 months. A wine that displays the outright richness and power of the vintage. Deep, intense, plum, dark cherry and spice are prevelant right away on the nose and palate. 2017 was not an easy harvest, but it produced some beautiful and classical wines, like the 2017 Viña Ardanza Reserva, which shows a little more advancement and polish and is ready to drink. It was produced with 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha from their vineyard La Pedriza in Tudelilla. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in American oak barrels, 36 months for the Tempranillo and 30 for the Garnacha (that was harvested 15 days later), with six rackings. It's ripe and aromatic, tertiary, with 14.5% alcohol and mellow acidity, a medium-bodied palate and sleek tannins. It has a pungent note of clove and pepper, some licorice and ink and the cherries in liqueur from the Garnacha. An updated classical Ardanza. 600,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2021.

The super bargain of the portfolio has to be the red 2017 Viña Cubillo Tinto Crianza, which this year shows more development and faster aging, with more tertiary notes than the other reds from 2013 and 2014 that I tasted next to it. The frost of April 2017 killed 100% of the vegetal mass at Cubillo, and the grapes they picked were exclusively from the second generation, therefore fruit that ripened in a much shorter cycle, as the harvest was also earlier. It has notes of damp earth, mushrooms, truffles and forest floor, dry leaves and decayed flowers and herbs. It has a polished palate and is medium-bodied, with mostly resolved tannins, and it feels a little lighter. But it's still worth it. It was produced with a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 5% each Graciano and Mazuelo from vines averaging 53 years of age. It fermented in their old oak vats and matured in used American oak barrels for three+ years. It has 13.5% alcohol, a 3.0 pH and 6.5 grams of acidity. 90,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2023.

Fruit from the youngest vines is directed here and is selected from across the estate's holdings on the north-facing side of the volcano, where some of the best vineyards are located. With 14 months in French oak casks, the wine opens to a lean garnet appearance with aromas of pressed violet, cassis and Sicilian blood orange. It ends with balanced freshness over a mid-weight texture and a pop of bright cherry.

Very intense clear aromas of dark Morello cherries and wild raspberries on the nose. Fresh on the palate with a touch of herbal mint, precise acidity and a long mineral-salty finish. Very animating - pure Pinot Noir with a powerful chewy finish.
The fully mature grapes are hand-picked at the ideal moment of ripeness during the harvest season. After they are sorted, destemmed and crushed in wine cellar. The must is fermented spontaneously on the skins for 3-4 weeks. The cap is punched down manually three times each day (pigeage). After fermentation the wine is pressed with low pressure, settled and transferred to French 225l oak barrels. Following the completion of malolactic fermentation, the wine stays in the barrels for 20 months. Bottled unfiltered without racking or fining at 13% alc.

La Storia Merlot is and has been consistently fine example of the ability of this classic Bordeaux variety to make solid, tasty and age worthy wines. The main aromas and flavors are of dark cherry, plums, a bit of black licorice and herbs. The new oak barrels contribute a touch of vanilla, brown sugar, cocoa dust and toast. On the mouth the wine is soft and viscous, balancing the acidity and the tannins well for such a young wine. The finish is long and soft with suggestion of sweetness backed by ripe tannins. This wine will age well and will reward your patience if stored well in the next 3-6 years.

The new kid on the block is Vit??cola Mentridana, a family and friends project from Dani Landi (Comando G) and Curro Bare??o (Ca' di Mat and Fedellos) with family vineyards and some of the brands that used to belong to Landi. The first vintage is 2021, but the 2020s are already labeled and sold through this new project. In total, they have 15 hectares in M??ntrida and Real de San Vicente, some owned, some rented, but all are worked by them organically (and in due time they should get the certification). Production is around 40,000 bottles. It's a great new addition to Gredos.
