Brothers Julian and Sebastian were raised in the wine country of southern Germany, but moved to California after finishing school, and have been making wine together there since 2015. Working with some ancient vines (the Mataro & Carignan vines were planted in 1893!), they have quickly developed a dedicated following. This “red blend” is a festival of red berries, pomegranate, plum, mint and lilacs: bright and juicy with some chalky, dark tannins for structure.

The 2022 Chianti Classico Berardenga is superb. Rich and deep yet also quite translucent, the 2022 is an archetype of Castelnuovo Berardenga. Black cherry, leather, spice, tobacco, menthol and dried herbs inform this potent, super-classic Chianti Classico. This is beautifully done, especially for the year.

100% Touriga Naçional. Sustainably grown vines on average 30 years old .Tended in schist rocky soil at 300-400 m (984 -1,312 ft) elevation. 30 day maceration with spontaneous wild yeast fermentation. Cold stabilized, and racked to stainless steel for 3 months. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Dark purple. On the nose, fresh boysenberry, blackberry, plum and blueberry are commingled with a ferrous mineral note and wild notes of beef blood, anise and rose petals. On the palate, intense and lush, but light on its feet. The blue and black fruit are framed beautifully by fresh flowers and slate-tinged mineral. Finishes long, with a whiff of white pepper.

This is an expression of Portugal’s most well-known grape, Touriga Naçional, that manages to be both evocative of the terroir of the Alentejo and a uniquely fresh take on the “king of Portugal.” Carbonic maceration and careful attention to maintenance of acidity give this wine a beautiful duality of ripe fruit paired with floral and even juicy citrus notes. An excellent red wine for white wine lovers.

Contemporary and fine, vinous and fragrant, this is focused on dark fruit and fresh roses with leather and meaty depth. There is a hidden complexity that slowly reveals itself. Supple on the medium-bodied palate, this has moderate acidity and ripe, elegant tannins with slightly peppery flavors. Fruity and superjuicy with a savory aftertaste. From organically and biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.

100% Teroldego. This is the estate's core red: first bottled by Elisabetta's parents back in 1960 and their largest production today. It comes from 9 hectares of estate vines, planted from 1956 to 2005 on the flat, sunny, well-drained Camp Rotaliano plateau right around the winery. The soils are a range of alluvial sand and gravel and feature Dolomitic limestone. Older vines are trained traditionally in pergola; younger vines are trained on wires in guyot. The farming is certified biodynamic. There are 15 separate parcels, all hand-harvested and vinified separately. The bunches are partly destemmed and partly left intact, depending on the vintage; the uncrushed berries and the whole clusters are layered in cement tanks, where they ferment spontaneously with indigenous yeasts and no sulfur. The wine is aged for around a year in well-worn, 20-40-hectoliter botti and bottled without fining or filtration and with a small dose of sulfur.

For an entry-level pinot noir from a cool region like the Mosel, this is absurdly good. Wonderful rooty complexity on the deep and subtle nose. Impressive concentration and a velvety texture that’s hard to resist. I love the vitality in the long, plush finish. Excellent aging potential. Drink or hold.

100% Pinot Noir from a mix of vineyards on slate. 50% stem inclusion. Vinified 3 weeks in open fermenters then matured briefly in used Burgundy barrels. Bottled unfiltered. Bright magenta in color, fruit-driven, juicy, buoyant, and addictively drinkable. The price is just silly. 12.5% abv

A vineyard selection of Otskhanuri Sapere (oh-sah-kh-ah-noo-ree sah-pear-eh) made by the young woman winemaker Gvantsa Abuladze, sister of Baia Abuladze and brother Giorgi Abuladze. This rare and difficult to say variety is sourced from their estate in the village of Obcha. All red varietals grown in Imereti are higher acid, lower sugar grapes due to the humidity of the region. Otskhanuri Sapere is especially known for its ridiculously dark color. The grape is notoriously hard to work with since it is difficult to get the necessary sugar levels. 2019 was a typical year so this was the last grape they picked in the second week of November. All the fruit is estate grown, hand picked and hand sorted. After destemming the wine is pressed and put into qvevri with skins and fermentation starts spontaneously. Once fermentation is completed the skins are removed and the wine is aged in qvevri.

Insane dark color, notes of pomegranate, sour cherry, this wine has crazy cool crispness, medium-plus body, super dry with firm fresh tannin on the finish.

"This "crazy value" Napa Cab was sourced from a couple of top "Cult" wineries in the Valley (SHHH...their wines sell for between $75-150/bot!). Deep, rich and plush with classic Napa Cab fruit, it drinks like a wine costing 2-3 times as much! The Hardin Cabernet Sauvignon is a combination of top valley floor and hillside sites, it's a blend of 98 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2 Cabernet Franc aged in French oak (20 new) for about 22 months. A wine that displays the outright richness and power of the vintage. Deep, intense, plum, dark cherry and spice are prevelant right away on the nose and palate. But the signature of the vintage is then on full display with minerality, balancing structure and a vibrant, fresh core that lifts the fruit and carries the wine. The 2024 Morgon Côte du Py has a vivid, stony bouquet with redcurrant and raspberry fruit unfolding in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins and a touch more sour cherry in the mix, especially on the piquant finish. Again, this is very promising and might become the edgiest of Burgaud's 2024s.

"Dark purple ruby core, slightly lighter at the rim showing light staining on the glass. Aromatic with bright ripe black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, baking spice, savory dried autumn leaves, subtle violet floral notes with a hint of caramelized barrel sweetness.
Dry, moderate plus bodied, with ripe red and black cherry, and blackcurrant fruit joined by vanilla and cinnamon spice notes on the entry. The mid-palate is fresh with sustained ripe fruit, toasty oak notes, and softly textured tannins. The finish is moderately long with notes of cherry candy and blackcurrant fruit matched with subtle classic Cabernet savory elements."

Sourced from a mix of sites in Kallstadt and one vineyard in Bad D??rkheim where the soils here are light and sandy. The grapes were handpicked, destemmed and fermented in stainless stee. The wine is pale, succulent and nervy with terrific cran/cherry fruit, fresh soil notes and very little oak in evidence. 12% abv

70% Nebbiolo, 10% Vespolina, 10% Croatina, 10% Uva Rara, wow, we’re on here! Very mineral off the bat, which is enchanting and attention grabbing. Restrained aromas of balsamic, ferrous, iodine, cherry, faint red rose. The restraint draws you into the glass, and what you find keeps you there. Very good with a great burst of intensity on the palate, which balances compaction and openness well. Burgundian in feel, Very classy, poised, and precise. An outstanding wine.

A classical, typical Rioja Alta red with elegant notes of vanilla, coconut, smoked spices and strawberries. Refined and suave, with fine tannins and a long, creamy finish. Juicy and elegant. Really approachable now, but give it two more years to get more mushroom complexity.

The younger wine here is the 2020 Vi¤a Alberdi, a versatile version of the Haro reds. It was produced with Tempranillo fermented in stainless steel and matured in American oak barrels for two years (it's sold as Reserva in international markets and Crianza in Spain). It has 14% alcohol with a pH of 3.6 and five grams of acidity. It has a classical nose of ripe fruit, American oak and spices, the subtle notes of forest floor, still young. The palate is velvety and very balanced with polished tannins.

Winemaker Notes:
60% Barbera/40% Bonarda (aka Croatina, not the same Bonarda found in Argentina). Trebbiolo is made from the youngest, most productive vines, aged 5-20 years and grown on the estate's gentle slopes and heavy clay soils. The fruit is organically farmed and harvested by hand. It is destemmed and fermented with native yeasts in stainless steel with a 20-day skin maceration; the wine is aged in stainless steel. No sulfur at any point in the process. The name "Trebbiolo" is derived from the name of nearby river and valley Trebbia; if La Stoppa opted into the Italian appellation system, Trebbiolo would be their version of a Gutturnio Fermo DOC wine.

Masses of crushed raspberries mix with wild herbs, dried roses and hints of underbrush as the 2019 Vino Rosso Trebbiolo opens up in the glass. It?????s soft and round in feel yet bristling with energy as vibrant acids enliven its crisp red and blue fruits. Sweet spices, zests of citrus and hints of mint form toward the close as this tapers off nicely refreshing with medium length. You?????d be hard-pressed to stop at just one glass. The Trebbiolo is a juicy and no-frills blend of 60% Barbera and 40% Bonarda.

The super bargain of the portfolio has to be the red 2017 Viña Cubillo Tinto Crianza, which this year shows more development and faster aging, with more tertiary notes than the other reds from 2013 and 2014 that I tasted next to it. The frost of April 2017 killed 100% of the vegetal mass at Cubillo, and the grapes they picked were exclusively from the second generation, therefore fruit that ripened in a much shorter cycle, as the harvest was also earlier. It has notes of damp earth, mushrooms, truffles and forest floor, dry leaves and decayed flowers and herbs. It has a polished palate and is medium-bodied, with mostly resolved tannins, and it feels a little lighter. But it's still worth it. It was produced with a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 5% each Graciano and Mazuelo from vines averaging 53 years of age. It fermented in their old oak vats and matured in used American oak barrels for three+ years. It has 13.5% alcohol, a 3.0 pH and 6.5 grams of acidity. 90,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2023.

Handpicked grapes picked from Napa Valley, with a large portion grown in St Helena. Destemmed and crushed for native yeast primary fermentation in closed-top vats on the skins for 24 days. The wine was racked to 40% new French oak barrels from Seguin Moreau, Boutes, Taransaud, and Nadalie for complete malolactic conversion, followed by 16 months of aging

The 2021 Malbec Old Vine comes from La Consulta, Paraje Altamira and Pampa El Cepilo in the Uco Valley. It was aged for 14 months, 35% in new French oak and the rest in used barrels. A rich, eye-catching purple in the glass. Fruity cherry, raspberry, crushed plum notes and hints of violets and sage dominate the aromatic profile. It's dry and juicy on the palate, with delicate, chalky tannins and a balanced mouthfeel. The 2021 is a nuanced, athletic Uco Valley Malbec.

The 2022 is just as good if not better!
Sustainably farmed Grenache 44%, Syrah 42%, Mourvedre 14% from four vineyard sites in Los Olivos and the greater Santa Ynez Valley - Rolling Vines, Bernat, Coteaux de Clair, and TTT Roblar. The Syrah and Grenache are fermented partly with whole clusters, while the Mourvedre is 100% destemmed. Fermentation is with native yeasts in open-top oak tanks. The wine is matured for 14 months in neutral barrique and bottled without fining or filtration.

Mallea is a collaboration between viticulturist Erik Mallea (director of viticulture at Sanford & Benedict and a co-founder of Willett-Mallea Farming) and winemaker Justin Willett (of Tyler Winery and Lieu-Dit Winery). After working together in various capacities for over a decade, Erik and Justin have started this exciting new project to highlight Santa Barbara County’s potential with Rhône grape varieties. They are farming four small vineyard sites clustered around Los Olivos in the Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara.

Third place was a nice surprise because it is a brand new wine on the scene, Mallea GSM Santa Barbara County. This is a traditional Rhone blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mouvedre (GSM) but from Santa Barbara County California. The pedigree of the guys behind it is first-rate but what impressed us was the juice in the bottle! If you enjoy Cotes du Rhone or Southern French reds you are going to love Mallea. This is a wine of subtlety and not as flamboyant as our number two wine. Clearly, the wine is masterfully blended as each component adds complexity, and yet the wine is seamless on the palate. Fresh jovial fruit dances on the tongue with its lively acidity while pepper and Mediterranean spices come out in the finish. Mallea GSM provides a ton of pleasure for a very reasonable price.

The labels reference Erik Mallea’s Basque heritage, depicting 19th & 20th-century aspen tree carvings by Basque shepherds in the American West. Erik’s father, Joxe Mallea-Olaetxe, is a respected scholar of this cultural tradition.

Ruby red colour with medium depth rim. Intense, fresh aroma. Complex notes of plum, enveloped against a very enjoyable balsamic undertone. Delicate leather and spicy touches that recall a subtle toastiness enhance the wine's finesse and elegance. Its broad, well-rounded tannins and ripe fruit provide a balanced, full-bodied mouthfeel. The 2020 Rioja Reserva, their flagship wine, comes from the 300 hectares of estate vineyards. Here, Tempranillo is the backbone, making up 82% of the blend in the low-yielding vintage of 2019, complemented with 8% Graciano, 7% Mazuelo and 3% Garnacha. It has controlled ripeness at 14% alcohol, with a pH of 3.65 and 5.1 grams of acidity. I loved the aromatics here—floral and elegant, more in the style of the 2018 than the 2019. it's lighter, more elegant, fine-boned and has a silky texture and very fine tannins. Both 2019 and 2020 are very good, but 2020 is more my style.

In September 2023, the Cebrián-Sagarriga family celebrated its 40th anniversary as owners of Marqués de Murrieta, which they bought in 1983. In 1996, Vicente Dalmau Cebrián took the reins of the winery, driving a deep transformation, and he continues today, relentlessly trying to improve every year. It's pretty amazing how the wines feel better each year, like a winery on its way up.

The grapes for the 2021 Reserva (sold as Crianza in Spain), mostly Tempranillo with some Garnacha Tinta, Mazuelo and Graciano, were picked late in a cooler year when they finished the harvest the 20th of October, with plenty of times for the grapes to develop full aromas and flavors and complete ripeness. It fermented destemmed and lightly crushed in oak vats with indigenous yeasts, separating qualities, villages and soils, and matured in 80% French and 20% American oak barrels, 20% of them new, for 24 months, with racking every eight to nine months. It's a textbook example of their style in a very good year, with power, concentration and clout, elegance and freshness. It was a very harmonious year; the cycle was long and the tannins ripened to perfection. It's terrific and more so for the volume they produce (984,000 bottles of it). It was fined with egg whites and bottled in January 2024.

A traditional Greek red wine made from organic 100% Xinomavro grapes by young winemaker Yiannis Mittas in the Naoussa region, known for its intense red fruit (cherry, plum), earthy notes (leather, tapenade), spice, and firm tannins, offering a complex, food-friendly profile often compared to Nebbiolo, excellent with lamb, and valued for its quality and value.

The Mittas family is one of the oldest in Naoussa, one of the most well-known appellations for the red variety Xinomavro, in northern Greece. Xinomavro offers higher acidity levels and lower alcohols while balancing the tannins. The soils in Naoussa are characterized by more clay and less sand, as well as considerable limestone, compared to neighboring areas. The climate here is continental. The style of the wines being made by Mittas is broadly traditional. Low-intervention farming (the vineyards are now fully converted and licensed as organic) and wine making are the general rule. The wine is aged for a year in French oak barrels, 25% first use, and then for an additional year in the bottle. The wine opens beautifully with a bit of time in a decanter.

The wines of Olga Raffault are a reference point of Chinon... in this delicious, savory, 100% Cabernet Franc you're treated to pencil shavings and wet grass which dominate the nose, and the palate balances cherry fruit with herbs and earth. Farming here is managed to the strictest of Organic standards. Wondering what to have along side this for dinner? Think about pork chops and mashed potatoes with mushrooms and garlic or if you're a fan of duck; have a glass alongside root vegetables and cranberries.

Les Picasses is the most famous Chinon lieu-dit, close to the village of Beaumont-En-Vron on the north bank of the Vienne River. It is a slope with full southern exposure and chalky clay-limestone soils. Raffault's mid-slope vines are at least 50 years old and are worked organically and harvested by hand. The fruit is destemmed with the berries left whole; they are fermented with indigenous yeasts in tank with a maceration of 25-30 days. The wine is aged for one to two years in 30-hectoliter oak and chestnut foudres; it is then aged in bottle for several years before release..

91% Cabernet Sauvignon 6% Petite Verdot, 3% Cab Franc. Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from 3 vineyards: the 60yr old Brigantino Vineyard, the 45yr old Wheeler Ranch, and the 75yr old Tres Pinos Creek Vineyard. The Petite Verdot and Cabernet Franc come from Paicines AVA, rocky alluvial deposits above the Tres Pinos arroyo. All vineyards experience warm days, cold nights typical of the Central Coast, allowing these late ripening Bordeaux varieties to be picked at high acidity and moderate sugars. Fermented whole berry with a very light crush in open top fermenters, allowing slower extraction, of tannins into the must and lots of oxygen into the fermentation for polymerization of tannins. Pressed after approximately 20 days. Aged for 11 months on lees in mostly neutral barrels with a couple of active oak barrels sprinkled in. 13.2% abv

"First created in 1954 (and released in warped, fake dusted bottle), the NV Chateauneuf du Pape La Fiole du Pape (a blend from 2010, 2011 and 2012) gives up classic garrigue, game and assorted sweet red and black fruits. Medium-bodied, nicely textured and easygoing, it?????s a solid, Provencal effort to enjoy over the coming 4-5 years." WA

After more than 70 years in the wine business—first as a retailer, then as a distributor and importer—the Terlato family went into winemaking with the purchase of Rutherford Hill in 1996. Today, they own more than 400 acres of prime vineyard land in Napa Valley, which they put to fine use in this well-priced Merlot. About 70 percent of the 2022 bottling comes from those vineyards, including the Terlato-owned Chimney Rock estate, whose Merlot vines are planted in the foothills of the Stags Leap District. Marking the first vintage for former winemaker Michael Coode, the 2022 is supple and elegantly structured. Coode fermented the juice in tanks, with twice-daily pump-overs, and then aged the wine for 14 months in a combination of new and used French oak.

Opening to a shiny and luminous appearance, the San Salvatore 1988 2024 Fiano Trentenare is loaded with fresh pear, peach and melon. This pretty wine proves easy to drink and would wash down nicely with fried sardines or calamari rings. There is good freshness and a hint of peachy sweetness to close. Winemaking is in stainless steel only.

The 2017 Reserva comes from the frost year when they lost a great part of the grapes. The cycle was very short and the summer was warm, and it was one of their earlier harvests. The wine comes in at a moderate 14% alcohol and feels very approachable, with grip and some tannins that would welcome food. They still produced 40,000 bottles, because there was less Crianza.

A neatly cut array of refined red and black cherries in a pristinely cast style. The palate has an elegant and neatly defined core of supple, long and ripe fruit flavor and carries a wealth of crisp, fresh, cherry-soaked tannins at the finish.

Winemaker's Notes:
As this wine is poured into your glass, you will notice its beautiful, dark ruby red color. This is a classic Russian River Pinot Noir that expresses aromas and flavors of dark fruit. The first impression starts in the nose with aromas of intense blackberry, cola and black raspberry followed by a touch of vanilla and hints of rhubarb, baking spice, licorice, dark chocolate and earth. The wine is richly textured and balanced with a beautiful brightness. Flavors of black cherry, tobacco and sweet barrel spice shine throughout. Fine tannins round out the long, juicy finish.

The 2023 Le Volte Dell'Ornellaia is a saturated red/ruby color and is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot, raised in used barrels for around 10 months. Always a wine leaning into the fruity and approachable side of things, the nose is fruity and fresh with aromas of candied flowers, crushed raspberries, red apples, and fresh stony earth. Medium to full-bodied, it’s very elegant with a joyful ease. It’s a great snapshot into these wines, which are mighty tasty now and have a lot of character. Drink 2025-2035.

Made with 98% Nerello Mascalese and 2% Nerello Cappuccio, the Tenuta delle Terre Nere 2022 Etna Rosso is an ample and ambitious production of 160,000 bottles. Fruit from the youngest vines is directed here and is selected from across the estate's holdings on the north-facing side of the volcano, where some of the best vineyards are located. With 14 months in French oak casks, the wine opens to a lean garnet appearance with aromas of pressed violet, cassis and Sicilian blood orange. It ends with balanced freshness over a mid-weight texture and a pop of bright cherry.

The 2021 Almirez, sourced from La Jara, Villabuena del Puente and Valdefinjas vineyards in Toro, was aged up to 14 months in oak barrels. Garnet in hue. Its ripe aromas feature plums, dried flowers, undergrowth, licorice and garrigue against a cedar backdrop. Dry and rich on the palate, the mild and balanced flow leads to a lasting, juicy, cherry-like finish. The 2021 is a nuanced Toro wine.

La Storia Merlot is and has been consistently fine example of the ability of this classic Bordeaux variety to make solid, tasty and age worthy wines. The main aromas and flavors are of dark cherry, plums, a bit of black licorice and herbs. The new oak barrels contribute a touch of vanilla, brown sugar, cocoa dust and toast. On the mouth the wine is soft and viscous, balancing the acidity and the tannins well for such a young wine. The finish is long and soft with suggestion of sweetness backed by ripe tannins. This wine will age well and will reward your patience if stored well in the next 3-6 years.

A medium-bodied red, with a graphite and cigar box underpinning to the generous core of plum and cassis, which lengthens around fresh acidity, adding notes of dried sage and anise on the long finish around precise tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Syrah. Drink now through 2036.

Cocodrilo comprised of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Malbec, and 24% Cabernet Franc. It is rich, complex, and yet elegant on the palate. Coming from higher altitude regions, this wine highlights the potential of each varietal that composes it. Deep ruby ??red with darker highlights. Aromas of blueberries, plums, sweet spices, and graphite are present on the nose. Balanced medium body with firm tannins and a long finish. Aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, 14% first use. Unclarified.

The new kid on the block is Vitícola Mentridana, a family and friends project from Dani Landi (Comando G) and Curro Bareño (Ca' di Mat and Fedellos) with family vineyards and some of the brands that used to belong to Landi. The first vintage is 2021, but the 2020s are already labeled and sold through this new project. In total, they have 15 hectares in Méntrida and Real de San Vicente, some owned, some rented, but all are worked by them organically (and in due time they should get the certification). Production is around 40,000 bottles. It's a great new addition to Gredos.

Fleshy and greedy wine. Typical nose of the viognier with ripe yeallow fruits with a nice violet touch. Juicy and fresh ont the palate with an nice acidulous finish.

Pierre counts himself lucky as 70% of his vineyards for the Chavignol Blanc are south facing. The hillsides are not as steep as Beaujeu or Mont Damnes and so he is able to use a tractor. He works with natural fermentations with spontaneous yeasts in stainless steel tanks and the wines are aged on the fine lees until bottling
