90 points Vinous
The 2020 Tinto Vinhas Velhas is a field blend of over 20 varieties from Dao. With a purple-red hue, the nose exhibits reductive notes reminiscent of blood, along with hints of plums and chutney. Rich and intense on the palate, the reactive tannins compact the fairlyconcentrated mouthfeel, resulting in a long lasting red.

70/30 blend of Alicante Bouschet and Trincadeira, aged for 15 months in new French oak. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. Far more elegant and graceful than the regular Tinto, this is equally powerful but not as jammy, not as dense and far fresher. Here, the fruit is expressed better. There is still intensity of flavor, without the same heaviness, without the same stolid demeanor. It's tightly wound and beautifully balanced. This is nicely done.

With flavors of dried figs, apricots and crushed hazlenuts, this tawny port -- a blend of mostly old vintages with a few more recent annums blended in to liven things up a bit -- manages to purport richness on the palate, but with a fresh, fine finish that feels deliciously bright instead of weighty. We love this with a post-meal plate of salty, nutty cheeses and nuts, or served slightly chilled for a pre-dinner appetite rev. -- PJ

Silky and plush, this tawny sees about 3 years of barrel aging in small oak casks, giving it a rich, amber hue and deliciously decadent notes of butterscotch, toffee, vanilla, and dried fig. For port-lovers, this a great every-day sipper for the price -- a little bit of luxury in the middle of the week! -- PJ

Situated on the volcanic island of Pico, this cooperative is the largest and oldest winery in the Azores. This isn’t any run-of-the-mill cooperative either, but a high-level artisan winery using grapes from the local growers. In fact, the wines have long had an international reputation – it’s reported that in 1917, bottles of Verdelho do Pico were found in the cellar of Czar Nicolas II!
The vines are grown on small volcanic black rocks (biscoitos) and are surrounded by stone walls called currais. The rocks heat up in the sun, helping the grapes ripen, while the walls protect the vineyards from the elements. The Azores, an island chain in the middle of the Atlantic, has what you might call an “extreme maritime climate.” And of course, Mount Pico is always visible in the background. This dormant volcano (last eruption 1970) is Portugal’s highest point.
Ilha do Pico boasts some of the most unique vineyards seen anywhere, and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage region. Of course, we wouldn’t be representing this producer just based on pretty scenery - rest assured the wines are just as beautiful as the place where they are made.

100% Castelão. This is the PoP's version of the Castelao wine from Tiago and Antonio. The grapes here also come from Montejunto, north of Lisbon, and undergo a light maceration, with only three days on the skins, and are fermented on whole clusters. The wine rests for 11 months. This is a "junior Castelão", lighter and fresher than most wines made of this grape, however it still shows the uniqueness of Portuguese wines with its Atlantic character.

What's so lovely about Dow's non-vintage tawny is how wonderfully bouyant it is. Sure, it's got the intense, concentrated, succulent, dried-fruit sweetness you expect in an after-dinner sipper, but there are lovely notes of orange citrus and almond here that keep it aloft on your palate, and nicely complement a hunk of Asiago or Fontina cheese. -- PJ

A blend of indigenous grapes Baga and Bical from Bairrada (hence the name 3B), this traditional-method sparkling exudes texture, elegance and salinity. Husband-and-wife team extraordinaire Filipa Pato and William Wouters deliver mineral tension and purity of fruit, seen here in the clear outline of the cranberry, pink grapefruit and pomegranate notes, topped by savoury aniseed and tarragon
There is no dosage on this lightly pink, beautifully made wine. It has fresh crisp fruit, just hinting at raspberry, floating easily to its final fresh finish.

Natalia Jessa is the mastermind behind Gota which has a simple yet bold objective: craft aromatically-driven, authentic fine wines of Portugal, while remaining value-conscious. Her many prior travels throughout Portuguese wine country on behalf of one of Europe’s major food markets enabled Natalia to develop invaluable relationships and gain access to some of the most exciting and as-of-yet undiscovered wineries and vineyards. She collaborates with them, as negociant, to select grapes that capture the optimal expression of a vintage. Vineyards are dry-farmed. Vines are ungrafted. To preserve fruit aromatics, winemaking utilizes ambient yeast and minimizes oak use. Adhering to tradition, wines are varietal blends and grapes are only native (no international varietals). A blend of the native varietals Jaén and Tinta Roriz. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks and traditional, open-topped stone lagares. Most of the grapes are destemmed before fermentation. The grapes undergo seven to 28 days of skin contact. aging for 6 months in cement and used barrel. A full but restrained mouthfeel reveals delightful plum and black currant notes. Intriguing herbal, or garrigue, element coyly pokes its head out. This is a dry, easy-drinking value from Portugal that may surprise you with how much it has to offer. It surprised me!
