Pear and pineapple aromas meet fine, floral characters in the 2020 Demi-Sec Le Haut-Lieu. While this wine's edges are rounded, it is refined and elegant. It has a sense of density on the mid-palate, but it's not about weight or richness despite its demi-sec status. The wine has an intensity and a structured core reflecting the naturally low yields here. While there is 20g/L of residual sugar, a sense of freshness and underlying urgency pulls this wine through, leaving an off-dry impression. Unfinished sample.

The 2020 Vouvray Le Haut-Lieu Demi-Sec is clear, pure, subtle, deep and fresh, with highly refined chalky/sandy lemon aromas. Rich and intense yet silky textured and refined on the concentrated palate, this is a juicy, highly elegant, perfectly balanced, persistently salty and mouth-salivating Haut-Lieu with very fine tannins and a long, firm and pretty powerful but elegant and complex finish. Still more stringent than the Le Mont Demi-Sec in the beginning, but after aeration, this is not just a greatly finessed Chenin but one of the finest Haut-Lieu's I have tasted from Huet. Tasted as a tank sample in April 2021.

The Ehrenfels are the iconic castle ruins that sit atop the Rüdesheimer Berg's western edge. The 40+ year-old vines produce small berries with high concentration. The Ehrenfels Grosses Gewächs combines power and elegance; it isn’t as tropical as the Hinterhaus, nor as floral as the Katerloch and is right behind Rottland in terms of masculinity.
A wine of true pedigree, this displays beautifully refined and complex aromas of beeswax, honey, white peach, frankincense and honeysuckle The aromas may suggest sweetness, but the palate is as dry and stony as the hillside on which the grapes are grown It has terrific intensity now, but if you can hold on to a few bottles for a few years, it will get even better The Berg Schlossberg vineyard lies at the western end of Rheingau, where the river takes a sharp turn to the north The dramatically steep slope, southerly exposure, superb drainage and protection from north winds by the Taunus Mountains make for an outstanding Grand Cru site - a challenge to cultivate, but the resulting wine makes the effort more than worth it.

The 2020 Riesling Berg Rottland Grosses Gewächs was grown on loess and loam atop soft grey slate so roots can penetrate in a parcel called Hinterhaus from 40-50-year-old vines. A touch of mango and passion fruit pip appears on the nose, lending some tropical allure. The palate is smooth and concentrated, almost with a kind of banana-creaminess, a fine backbone of freshness, despite the 2020 heat, and a real phenolic touch. There's lovely acidity, and it's properly dry. (Bone-dry). Drinking Window: 2025 - 2050

The 2020 Riesling Berg Roseneck Grosses Gewächs was grown in the Katerloch parcel, within the cleft of the vineyard. The nose is gentle with peach, almost creamy. The palate comes with much concentration and a fine phenolic structure. Freshness is expressed with lemon intensity, and a saltiness comes through on the finish. Despite the hot year, this is fresh and has a lovely long and salty echo. (Bone-dry) Drinking Window 2025-2050
The "Katerloch," or “Devil’s Hole,” is the amphitheater portion of the mountain that appears as though it was carved out of the slope of the Rüdesheimer Berg. These are some of Leitz’s steepest holdings alongside Schlossberg, with up to 65° inclines. Katerloch is always the coolest and leanest of the GG’s, typically expressing aromas of lime citrus, fennel and wintergreen alongside firm acid structure.
