In 2015, chateau owner Bertrand Gourdou was searching through an old desk when he came across a label that his grandfather had made in the early 1970’s; that wine was called “Le pot-de-vin” which, in French, translates to “the bribe”, which for that era was an audacious play on words for a wine label! This label inspired Bertrand to make a simple, natural wine: biodynamically grown fruit, fermented with native yeast and with a negligible dose of SO2, made in concrete tanks built by his grandfather. The word "pot" also references the old-style bottle shape.
The rouge is 100% Merlot from the IGP Pays d’Oc, made with no oak in a light-to-medium-bodied style with gloriously fruit, freshness and length. It is, simply put, the quintessential French bistro red.

Traditional vinification Grapes are sorted and de-stemmed after the harvest with each vineyard parcel being vinified separately. Wine is fermented in stainless steel with daily punch-downs; fermentation lasts anywhere from 15 to 18 days. Wine is blended in January and aged in foudre and 1-2 years in old barrels from Bordeaux grand crus.
This wine displays a deep ruby-color, with a jammy cherry and new saddle leather-scented nose, this medium-bodied, ripe, attractive, concentrated wine exhibits fine balance, soft tannins, and a velvety finish.

Moving to the reds, the 2020 Vacqueyras Les Hauts De La Ponche is 50% Grenache and 25% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre. It actually reminds me of a Pomerol with its red and blue fruits as well as bouquet garni, damp earth, and floral nuances. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, I love its balance, and it has silky tannins and remarkable purity of fruit. Drink bottles over the coming 7-8 years.
