Ripe but restrained, with a tantalizing tug-of-war between floral and earthy, this Limniona speaks clearly of its soil. The 2020 is medium- bodied but heavy on complexity, offering in turn the sharpness of raspberries, a bloody tang wreathed in smoke, and the woodland character of the layer on the ground where old leaf litter dissolves into the earth below. Their Gran Reserva style red 2015 Penas Aladas Gran Reserva had a very long aging in barrel a total of 54 months including six months of malolactic fermentation. This comes from a myriad of small plots of some of the oldest vines in the village of La Aguilera in the same zone that names the wine at 870 to 890 meters in altitude. The valley receives very cold winds from the Duero River and the vineyards are surrounded by junipers pines and oak trees which makes it up to three degrees Celsius lower than the rest of the village one of the coldest places in the whole of Ribera del Duero. The soils have a layer of sand that is gradually mixed with clay until around one meter deep and then there's a layer of marl and limestone a textbook soil for the vine. 2015 was a powerful vintage and there was some frost that also delivered a little more concentration. The wine has an old Ribera del Duero style with some rusticity and lots of power energy and concentration but with great balance. It has plenty of fine tannins and lots of chalkiness. This should be very long lived. 2223 bottles and 41 magnums were hand bottled unfiltered and unfined in May 2020.

Very deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Dominus slowly emerges from the glass with profound notes of blackcurrant cordial, ripe black plums, boysenberries and Black Forest cake with hints of violets, star anise, cracked black pepper, raspberry leaves and pencil lead, plus a touch of garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers impactful black fruit layers, creating a beguiling sense of richness that is beautifully countered by invigorating freshness and great poise, framed by super ripe, plush tannins and beautiful tension, finishing on a lingering fragrant earth note and, finally, lots of mineral sparks. For all that it is at the moment, one cannot help but feel that this 2018 is holding something back. The 2018 Dominus is wild and exotic from the first taste. Lifted aromatics make a strong opening impression. There is something exuberant about the 2018 that is hard to describe. The 2018 is not a huge Dominus, nor is it massively structured, but the intensity of the flavors is remarkable just the same. The 2022 Riesling Oberhäuser Brücke Spätlese is from a site that combines weathered shale, weathered sandstone and volcanic formations, "but essentially the vines root in Tonschiefer or shale," Helmut says. It is not a steep site; in the valley, cold air flows at night, and the days are hot. This has the biggest day-night amplitude and is close to the river. The nose is of confounding aromatic complexity: green elements of citrus, think lime jelly, citrus leaf. The palate has a tropical intensity that brings passion fruit, lime, mango and much more intense sweetness that is always cut with vivid acidity. The 2022 is wonderfully exciting, hair-raising, almost joyful, or, as Helmut calls it, "crazy." Simply wonderful. (Sweet)

A blend of 12-year-old Don Nuno Oloroso (80%) and San Emilio PX which is also about 12 years old. One of the great icons of Lustau. Its aging process mimics that of some 17th century wines developed during transatlantic journeys to distant Spanish colonies. To achieve this, after aging separately in their own soleras, the Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez that comprise it, are combined and undergo a second aging process in a solera of 33 barrels at the Sacristia de Bodegas Lustau, with its elevated humidity and temperatures that replicate the climatic conditions that the wines would have experienced on their journeys.

Emilio Lustau SA was founded in 1896 by Don Jose Ruiz-Berdejo. In the beginning, Lustau was essentially an Almacenista, a modest estate with small holdings that sold most of its wine to large exporting Bodegas. It was not until the 1950s that Lustau became Emilio Lustau SA, and it joined the prestigious ranks of a select group of exporters of Sherry. In the early 1980s, Emilio Lustau SA, then under the management of the late Rafael Balao, became one of the most innovative companies in Jerez, launching the "Almacenista" line and creating the distinctive bottle that we know today. Lustau is now widely considered one of the finest producers of Sherry, with their Almacenista line breaking new ground in hand-crafted, boutique wines. These Sherries, drawing on rare and marvelous wines held by small producers, are some of the finest Sherries made today.

Lustau offers a wide array of Sherries; bone-dry Finos are wonderful matches with garlic-y shrimp and langostinos. Racy Amontillados balance power with finesse and are wonderful with nuts, olives, cheeses, and jamon Serrano. Powerful Olorosos can be served during a meal and match well with traditional soups and stews. The Lot 38 La Bota de Viejo Cream Bota No is the sequel to the sweet oloroso that was Lot 19. It originates from the blending of a Pedro Ximenez over a century ago when the Solera was started. It has a fairly light bouquet that opens with aeration: hazelnut, macadamias, subtle note of caramel and nougat. The palate is medium-bodied with a lovely viscous opening: a touch of spice, eau-de-vie, caramel and cafe latte underpinned by beautifully judged acidity and a sensual harmonious long finish. Superb.

900 bottles produced. La Bota de Viejo Cream 38 "Bota NO" is a new release of edition 19 in the series: a sweet oloroso that has aged as such in a 9-butt solera under the label "Viejo Cream", never before commercially available except for a few exceptional sacas for British customers. This solera has in turn a bota NO as well as a double NO- of notably higher age and character, and which is where this wine has been sourced, again in limited volumes. This sweet oloroso results from a blending process with top-quality pedro ximénez that was performed early on, when the solera was founded, likely over a century ago. Harmonious integration during these decades has made the wine finer and rounder, thanks to the patience of several generations of winemakers, reaching today a prodigious balance between the raciness of dry oloroso and the mellowness of sweet PX.

What originally started out as a private buying club for an outstanding Amontillado located in the cellar of Miguel Sánchez Ayala, has become one of the most sought after series of bottlings sourced from, and inspired by the wines of Jerez and Montilla-Moriles. Jesús Barquín, a professor of criminal law at the University of Granda and Eduardo Ojeda, the technical director of Grupo Estévez, guided by their vast knowledge of, and unparalleled access to, the best wines, cellars and soleras of the region, have since 2005 assembled one of the finest offerings of Sherries in the market. When word got out about their project, what was once a hobby became a full-fledged commercial enterprise. Supply remains limited and demand has only increased. Since that first cask of Amontillado, labeled simply Bota de Amontillado no.1 in honor of the short story by Edgar Allan Poe, each successive bottling as been numbered, bottled en rama, limited in release and quick to sell out. Not content with only exploring the possibilities of fortified wines, Equipo has also released brandies, unfortified Palomino Fino aged under flor, and a couple of PX wines, one dry and one made from raisined grapes. They have also partnered with Dirk Niepoort and Quim Vila to make a Vin Jaune styled Palomino Fino and Sergei Colet to produce a Cava utilizing flor in the secondary aging of the wine as well as Sherry and Montilla for the dosage.

Following a soft pressing of the grapes, the juice is left in contact with the skins for only a few hours, lending the wine its light pink hue.

Ercole, whose English translation is Hercules, is only made possible by a generations-old cooperative of local growers in the Monferrato area. Every fall, these men and women cultivate pristine and sustainably farmed fruit, allowing us to make authentic wines that are transmitters of time and place. The cooperative behind Ercole works predominantly with old vines ranging from 30 to 50 years old. All participating growers adhere to the European Union rule for sustainable farming known as lotta integrata, or lutte raisonnée, though many are now certified organic. None of these growers use systemic treatments or chemicals, employing only minimal copper and sulfur. Both vinification and bottling are certified vegan.

Ezio Poggio is a true visionary or, as Italians would say, a personaggio. He is devoted to the revival
of Timorasso, one of Italy’s most dynamic wine grapes. Ezio planted his first vines in 2004,
reestablishing a long-lost growing zone now known as Terre di Libarna along the north face of
the Apennine Mountains, which separate Piedmont from Liguria. In 2011, Ezio successfully
petitioned for official recognition of a new subzone in the southern half of the Tortona Hills called
Terre di Libarna. His daring decision to grow Timorasso at an elevation of nearly 2,000 feet is
without peer, and his unique vision for the grape has yielded white wines of ineffable beauty and
poise. At merely 15 hectares, this small but mighty subzone of the Colli Tortonesi DOC
encompasses the highest elevation growing region for Timorasso. Ezio Poggio is the sole
producer in Terre di Libarna.

Timorasso thrives in white, rocky, calcareous-clay soils, which bear a strong resemblance to the marls, or Marne di Sant’Agata, found in parts of the Langhe. Unlike the Langhe or the Roero, however, very little sand is found in these hills. Terre di Libarna’s significant diurnal temperature swings are mitigated by warm Mediterranean air currents rising up from Liguria. While a relative newcomer to the international scene, the variety has long been esteemed in Piedmont, where Timorasso was often nicknamed "White Barolo" due to its incredible structure and age-worthiness. As early as the 1800s, ampelographers described Timorasso as a noble variety. Leonardo da Vinci, no less, is believed to have been a fan, having included a bottle of white wine known as Timuras and a local cheese from Colli Tortonesi among wedding gifts for Isabella di Aragona.

Characterized by intense, enduring herbal and mineral notes as well as high acidity, Timorasso is mediumto full-bodied with notes of white flowers, subtle stone fruit, and lemon. Due to the presence of an aromatic precursor abbreviated as TDN (trimethyl-dihydronaphthalene) also found in Riesling. Timorasso can yield age-worthy wines that develop great complexity over time. Such bottlings often demonstrate diesel or kerosene notes after several years in bottle. This PetNat is a blend of Grüner Veltliner, Roter Veltliner, and Riesling grapes from the Spielberg vineyard in Austria. The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented with natural yeasts. The wine is bottled before fermentation is complete, which results in a sparkling wine with a slight fizz.
The wine has a bright yellow color and aromas of freshly squeezed grape juice, fig, and physalis. The flavors are fruity and spicy, with a hint of gooseberry. The wine is dry and has a refreshing acidity.
