Vincent Punier created his Domain in 1988 when he inherited 2 hectares (5 acres) from his parents.
Today the domain is comprised of 13 hectares (32 acres) of vines located on the prestigious hillsides of Auxey-Duresses, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin. The vines are hand-harvested and vinified in a traditional manner, aged in classic percentages of new, one year and two year old oak barrique. Vincent seeks to create wines that have great energy, vibrancy, and balance. Vineyard practices include ploughing the vineyards to encourage deeper roots which in turn enables the vines to capture the complexity of the terroir of each site. Vincent created his domain almost from scratch and has grown it carefully over 30 years. As a one man show he has been intrinsically involved in every aspect of production including many hours working in the vineyards and time spent in the cellar fine tuning his wines. He lives above the winery located in Auxey Duresses and his Auxey Duresses rouge vineyard sits directly across the road. This close physical proximity underlines the very personal signature he makes on each wine he produces.

Domaine Zinck Portrait Riesling 2020
Domaine Zinck Portrait Riesling 2020
Regular priceYour Price: $9.97
Available: 58
This is classic Alsatian Riesling with great texture, slight waxiness, and zippy acidity. Bright orchard fruit notes with a mineral-driven core wrapped around that brilliant acidic backbone. This a dry expression of Riesling that compliments a variety of cuisine from cooked fish, raw, fresh goat's cheese, or farmer’s market vegetables. Do not let the moderate price fool you, this is sleek and lean, with great energy and tension. Is it too early to think about Thanksgiving Day dinner?
Domaine Zinck is located in Eguisheim, in the heart of Alsace. They have 14 hectares of vines located on plots between Eguisheim and Gueberschwihr, in the Upper Rhine region. The Zinck family has been cultivating vineyards and producing wine for four generations now. In 2011 they began organic farming practices and in 2018 they became fully biodynamic.
Their grapes are 100% hand-picked and then vinified and matured in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness.
"A great wine is born from the earth. We produce authentic wines that fully express the terroir on which they have matured. Organic cultivation and bio-dynamics are our essential principles to respect the earth and create the initial taste in the grapes. The manual harvest and meticulous vinification allow us to preserve what has been created in the vineyard, from the earth to the fruit.
We work hard together with my entire team to defend this philosophy throughout the seasons and we listen to our customers to evolve on a daily basis." - Philippe Zinck

Jorge Monzon considers 2020 to be an almost prefect vintage, cool and fresh, reminiscent of the great 2016. The pink 2020 Picaro del Aguila Clarete was produced with 35% Tempranillo, 35% Albillo Mayor and the rest other local grape varieties (Garnacha, Bobal, Brunal, Monastrell, Tempranillo Gris, other Albillos, Garnacha Blanca, Pirules, Jaen, Moscatel, Malvasias...) found in the old vineyards. This is very different from your average rose, more like a serious light red or powerful white that slowly fermented during 11 months and matured in barrel for 18 months. The orange-ish/pink wine is still young and lively, with some notes of toasted sesame seeds and a faint flinty reduction a little a la Coche-Dury, reminiscent of some vintages of their superb white. This was bottled without being racked, and perhaps that's why it has this nice reduction and could be the finest vintage to date. It has a strong chalky aftertaste from the limestone-rich soils, which makes it a terroir white, but it's also very marked by the style (which they updated from the traditional wines in Aranda in the old times) of a unique wine. It's balanced and mellow but not a shy wine, with 14% alcohol and a pH of 3.26. I've tasted 15+-year-old bottles of wines of this style, and they were still lively, so this one should not be shorter lived. Unique. Given my experience with past vintages, I'd wait a little before pulling the cork here. 8,358 bottles and 151 magnums produced. It was bottled in February 2022.
"Their flagship "clarete" is produced with a blend of white and red grapes (35% Tempranillo, 35% Albillo and the rest of mixed varieties). They recovered this ancestral style of wine in the zone of Aranda de Duero, produced with grapes from very old organically farmed vineyards where there are a lot of varieties mixed in the field (Garnacha, Bobal, Bruñal, Monastrell, Tempranillo Gris, other Albillos, Garnacha Blanca, Pirulés, Jaén, Moscatel, Malvasías...), and they all fermented together with Tempranillo and the white Albillo to create what they describe as "a wine that is not a rosé and has aromas of white and the spirit of a red." The clusters are pressed directly and the must settles in concrete in their ancient caves, then it ferments slowly (over eight to nine months) in oak barrels, where the wine matured for a total of 17 months. This is a wine that ages magnificently in bottle, and together with the rosé from López de Heredia (that technically is also a "clarete"), these are the two most characterful and best pink wines produced in Spain today." - Wine Advocate

The 2020 Les Choisilles offers a floral and pear-like aromatic character. It's round and ripe with good grip on the finish, which could be a result of the vintage having had little juice in it; the wines have excellent structure and fruit purity by Rebecca Gibb on 6/2022. Drinking window 2022-2032.
Old vines from the vineyards of Les Epinais, La Taille aux Loups and Clos au Renard. The wine is named after a type of black flint called choisille. Vinified sec in stainless steel using indigenous yeasts. Aged in a combination of tank and used demi-muids. 100% Gamay. About 3.5 of Georges Descombes' 15 hectares of vines are in the Brouilly cru; he also purchases a bit of Brouily fruit. There are two Brouilly bottlings: one from the oldest vines and this one, from the younger vines, which range 5 up to almost 50 years old. All are planted on hilly sites of decomposed granite soils. The farming is organic, though not certified, and the harvest is manual. The vinification is traditional: whole-bunch, semi-carbonic maceration in large vats (cement, fiberglass, stainless steel) with native yeasts and no sulfur. The wine is aged in a mix of vat and large wood foudres for around a year, making Descombes' releases generally quite a bit later than those of his fellow vignerons. It is bottled with a very small amount of sulfur and a light, non-sterile filtration.

A blend of the native varietals Jaén and Tinta Roriz. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks and traditional, open-topped stone lagares. Most of the grapes are destemmed before fermentation. The grapes undergo seven to 28 days of skin contact. aging for 6 months in cement and used barrel. A full but restrained mouthfeel reveals delightful plum and black currant notes. Intriguing herbal, or garrigue, element coyly pokes its head out. This is a dry, easy-drinking value from Portugal that may surprise you with how much it has to offer. It surprised me!
Natalia Jessa is the mastermind behind Gota which has a simple yet bold objective: craft aromatically-driven, authentic fine wines of Portugal, while remaining value-conscious. Her many prior travels throughout Portuguese wine country on behalf of one of Europe’s major food markets enabled Natalia to develop invaluable relationships and gain access to some of the most exciting and as-of-yet undiscovered wineries and vineyards. She collaborates with them, as negociant, to select grapes that capture the optimal expression of a vintage. Vineyards are dry-farmed. Vines are ungrafted. To preserve fruit aromatics, winemaking utilizes ambient yeast and minimizes oak use. Adhering to tradition, wines are varietal blends and grapes are only native (no international varietals). Gota means "drop", referring to the humble origins of this project.

The 2020 Hacienda Monasterio shows what Sisseck calls a "neo-classical" style of Ribera, with more freshness and 14.5% alcohol, harvested early and with higher yields. And possibly because of the Cabernet in the blend (around 10%), which also includes some Merlot and Malbec, the wine has great freshness (pH is 3.5) and avoids some of the excesses from the past. So, higher yields, an earlier harvest and careful oaking resulted in a more elegant wine. To me, it goes back to the benchmark Hacienda Monasterio, which for me is the 1996. A triumph over the natural conditions of the year. Drink 2023-2030.

An absolutely lip smacking Montelpuciano that shows none of the grapiness or downright ugliness of all too many cheap Abruzo table wines. Instead, the Pietrantonj shows outstanding cherry fruit, dried tobacco, and soft leather. But most importantly, it inspires you to keep returning to the glass. It was very interesting to taste the 2020 Sensal next to the 2019. The village red in this almost perfect harvest is a blend of Monastrell, Bonicaire, Arcos and Garnacha from older and younger vines fermented by plot with indigenous yeasts and a significant number of full clusters. The élevage lasted 10 months and was part in concrete, part in 300-liter oak barrels. The grapes achieved full ripeness and have plenty of aromas and flavors, with 13.59% alcohol, more Mediterranean while keeping the balance. This is what Sensal has to be, marked by the Monastrell, with that rustic touch of tree bark, with more color, concentration and power than the 2019 I tasted next to it. It has great depth and intensity, reflecting a superb Mediterranean vintage. 2,800 bottles were filled in July 2021.
Javi Revert is one of the best young winemakers from the Mediterranean zone of Spain. After years working for Celler del Roure, he started his own personal project. He also has a joint venture with a friend (also ex-Celler del Roure) and is the winemaker at Finca Sandoval. He has completed with plantings to have 10 hectares, half old vines planted by his grandfather and the other half planted by him, to have the grapes for the planned 25,000 bottles by 2026. He now makes some 12,000 bottles. He's conducting soils studies to achieve more precision in his wines. 2019 and 2020 were two very different vintages: 2019 had catastrophic torrential rains (the famous cold spell) of up to 300 liters in a few days in September in the middle of the harvest, whereas 2020 was a much better vintage, healthy and with very good quality, eminently Mediterranean.

Sleek and polished, with a bold cascade of blackberry confit, singed garrigue and warm fig, this is delicious and opulent yet powered by a savory undercurrent. Offers charred cedar that adds depth and roundness to the palate, while the pull of salt and crushed iron offsets the silky, dense character. This has staying power. I also tasted the 2019 Juan Gil (blue label), the wine formerly known as 18 Months, the time it spends in barrel. They use 100% new oak that is a mixture of French and American. The wine is ripe, oaky and heady (15.5% alcohol), but I felt a change in the oak, which seemed more integrated. When I asked Miguel Gil, he told me they had changed the toast, using less toasted barrels, from medium+ to medium, and that shows in the wine. They still believe this wine should have new oak to give it aging potential. They have also introduced optical sorting of the grapes and eliminate the raisins (by shape) and the unripe grains (by color), and that adds precision and cleanliness. 30,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in June 2021.

La Gerla rents and fully farms this vineyard in Castelnuovo dell'Abate in the southern part of the appellation. The vines are 15 years old, so they prefer to make a younger, fresher wine from it. Fermented in stainless steel, aged in used Slavonian oak botti for 4 months.
On the palate, silky textures give way to an intense mix of dark red berry fruits, both savory and sweet spices and wild herbal tones. The finish is long, as saturating spice coats the senses, offset by juicy acids, with hints of cedar and red wild berries lingering on.
Sangiovese Grosso (the famed Brunello clone) is the focus here and all of the farming is organic. The estate was once owned by Biondi Santi.

90% Malvasia/10% Ortrugo & Trebbiano Toscano. The different grapes are co-planted and the vines average 30 years in age. The fruit is picked together, destemmed and macerated with the skins for approximately a month (less time in warmer vintages, more in cooler ones); a cap of skins and seeds forms and is not broken but is kept moistened with the fermenting wine. Fermentation is with native yeasts only in steel tank; malolactic fermentation occurs naturally as well. The wine is aged for a year, half in stainlesss steel and half in used French oak, followed by two years in bottle before release. The name "Ageno" is in homage to the original owner of the estate, Giancarlo Ageno (a lawyer and wine enthusiast who brought French vine cuttings to Emilia in the 19th century)
