Whilst the origins of viticulture at Can Vendrell go back to the middle ages, it was not until 1903 that the Albet family established itself at the estate. Joan Albet i Rovirosa came to Can Vendrell to oversee the replanting of the estate after the Phylloxera plague. This process involved planting American rootstock and grafting the desired variety onto that rootstock. After replanting the vineyards he stayed on as manager of the 210 hectare estate of which 90 hectares were vineyards.

It was the fourth and current generation, Josep Maria Albet i Noya, that introduced organic farming methods to the vineyards. Josep Maria took over the management of the estate after his father's death in 1972 and at the end of the seventies started producing his first organic wines. With the success of that first wine produced specifically for the Danish market, they gradually moved the entire estate over to organic farming.

The family also finally acquired the estate that they had been farming for four generations. At this point, they began a long process of continuous rennovation of the cellar, as well as switching 100% of the estate over to organic farming methods.

We currently control 80.6 hectares of vineyards as well as buying grapes from local farmers who have converted to organic farming, paying the highest prices in the Penedès and advising the farmers to ensure the highest quality.

From all native Portuguese grapes, the prevalent grape in this blend is Loureiro. António and Sara vinify their wines by parcel rather than by varietal, which means this Vinho Verde is a direct product of the vineyard from which it came. Biotite, the cuvé’s namesake, is the dominant mineral present in the soils of this vineyard, lending a racy mineral quality to this wine. Grapes are handpicked and pressed in a pneumatic press while cold. Fermentation begins using only natural yeasts in stainless steel vats, after which the wine is aged in steel. The 2022 is just a touch sweet with 5.7g/L residual sugar and a little bit of malic acid left too. Weather was a bit extreme in 2022, but the Gewurz came in at the end of August before the heat wave or the rains. They are really happy with Rick's! Acid is present, but the wine is not overly lean or austere, the fruit is savory and the aromatics are a little more pronounced than the last few vintages. The end result is still a relatively subtle, but distinctly aromatic wine that is true to the variety.

Torrontés is the signature white wine of Argentina, dating from early vineyards first planted in the 1800s. DNA research has shown that the varietal is a cross between the Mission grapes of Galicia, Spain and Muscat of Alexandria. Bright yellow. Lovely nose melds lemon, menthol, dried herbs, lichee and ginger. Then almost surprisingly round, sweet and large-scaled in the mouth; quite full for Torrontés but also vibrant thanks to its healthy acidity (reportedly 6.7 grams per liter). A turpenic resiny quality is nicely countered by bright citricity and a floral note. This seriously palate-saturating Torrontés finishes long and outsized, with a slightly phenolic character. A rather extreme style from high-altitude vines (up to 7,500 feet) but it works. (made entirely in stainless steel)

The 2022 Albariño Legado del Fraile, originating from Rías Baixas, underwent a brief lees-aging in tank. It exhibits a green hue and reveals tropical and herbal notes atop a layer of green apple. With a dry and refreshing profile. This white wine is taut and savory, leaving a rich, enduring finish.

Grapes are pressed and macerated with the skins at cold temperatures for several hours to add aromatics and incorporate the native yeasts. The wine is then seperated from the skins and allowed to warm to begin fermentation. About half way through fermentation the wine is racked off the gross lees and allowed to continue. The gross lees are maintained and used as nutrient additions to help fermentation along. The wine ages on the fine lees for a few weeks with occassional stirring. The wine is bottled filtered and stabalized. Malo sometimes happens but is not controled.

Sourced from Mendocino County appellation, this cool coastal region has a longer growing season, thus creating a bright, fruit forward Pinot Noir. After harvest, the fruit was gently de-stemmed and moved to small open-top fermenters for a three-day cold soak. It was then inoculated with select yeast strains for fermentation. The cap was punched down 2-3 times daily to reach the desired color and level of phenols. After a gentle pressing in a basket press, the wine was settled and transferred to French oak barrels where it underwent malolactic fermentation. The wine was aged in French oak for nine months and then fined with organic egg whites prior to bottling.
