Altos Las Hormigas Gualtallary Reserve Malbec 2017
Altos Las Hormigas Gualtallary Reserve Malbec 2017Regular price Regular Price: $45.99 Sale price
Your Price: $39.97
After some ups and downs in past vintages, the 2017 Malbec Appellation Gualtallary is every bit as good as the already superb 2017. It's expressive, mineral and vertical, austere, like biting into chalk. It's produced with grapes from a rented plot in a somewhat fashionable appellation that is quite large and diverse. The palate is super austere, dry, serious and mineral, while the nose is expressive and has the wilderness of the place with unusual elegance and freshness for a year like 2017. It finishes long and tasty, with some violets. Could this be their best Gualtallary to date?
Alvaro Palacios Les Terrasses Priorat 2018
Alvaro Palacios Les Terrasses Priorat 2018Regular price Regular Price: $39.99 Sale price
Your Price: $34.97
The 2018 Les Terrasses Velles Vinyes is a blend of 55% Garnacha with 44% Cariñena and 1% white grapes. The destemmed and lightly crushed grapes fermented in concrete and oak vats with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured in barriques for 13 months. It keeps the more rustic side of their wines but with the finesse of 2018. It's a wine marked by a high percentage of Cariñena, but it's velvety, fresh and harmonious but with the dustier tannins. This is the British farmer, rustic but elegant with his Land Rover, the Wellington boots, corduroy trousers and a Barbour jacket... but with a Priorat twang.

Shimmering violet. Expressive aromas of cherry, blueberry and pipe tobacco pick up floral and exotic spice nuances with aeration. Concentrated yet energetic in the mouth, offering red and blue fruit, floral pastille and candied licorice flavors sharpened by smoky mineral and spice flourishes. Fine-grained tannins give shape to a very long, spicy finish that leaves a sappy blue fruit note behind.
Anselmo Mendes Curtimenta Alvarinho Vinho Verde 2019
Anselmo Mendes Curtimenta Alvarinho Vinho Verde 2019Regular price Regular Price: $39.99 Sale price

The 2018 Curtimenta is all Alvarinho, aged for nine months in used, light-toast French oak. It comes in at 12.8% alcohol, 1.5 grams of residual sugar and 6.5 of total acidity. This is all sourced from Quinta da Torre. Always one of my favorites of Mendes's oak-aged Alvarinhos, this shows off some power and its fine fruit. Both this year seem to be working in very good harmony. It's fresh and lively, but its beautiful balance makes it almost understated this year. As I've been saying with some of the other oak-aged Alvarinhos this issue, this is meant to be paired with food. It will show its best that way, as this isn't your typical Vinho Verde porch-sipper. All that said, the key question at this level is whether it can improve more and show something more complex as it ages. It certainly has the chance to do so.
Bodegas 501 Gades Pedro Ximenex Viejo Sherry NV
Bodegas 501 Gades Pedro Ximenex Viejo Sherry NVRegular price
Your Price: $36.99
Where: Sherry, Spain
Why: Because for the money this is one of the most intense PX?????s we?????ve ever tasted. Why? Lets start with honeyed raisins, oranges and almonds. Then there?????s chocolate and coffee and figs. But that?????s just the sugar talking. After those candied notes hit you they give way to salt, herbs, coffee grounds, tar and licorice. The flavor show does not stop... ever.
Bodegas Riojanas Monte Real Gran Reserva 2010
Bodegas Riojanas Monte Real Gran Reserva 2010Regular price Regular Price: $44.99 Sale price
Your Price: $39.97
All tertiary and balsamic aromas, the nose of the 2010 Monte Real Gran Reserva exploded in a mixture of cigar ash, incense, cold bonfire, used leather and forest floor. The palate was round and polished with some dusty tannins that should welcome some food.
100% Tempranillo from Cenicero. Classical vinification with destalked, crushed grapes, using new fermentation technologies and long maceration periods. Aged for 18 months in American oak barrels with the appropriate rackings and natural stabilization. Aged in the bottle for at least 6 months before release.
Cakebread Cellars Chardonnay Napa Valley 2019
Cakebread Cellars Chardonnay Napa Valley 2019Regular price
Your Price: $39.97
The 2018 Chardonnay comes 95 from Carneros and 5 from Napa Valley. Barrel fermented in 33 new oak, it spent eight months on the lees, and 18 went through malolactic. It was bottled June 1, 2019. Slowly, it reveals very pretty poached pears, apple pie and apricot scents with touches of beeswax, toasted almond and lanolin. Medium-bodied, the palate has great poise and finesse, delivering a racy backbone and loads of tight-knit stone fruit flavors, finishing long and toasty.

Cartuxa Tinto Reserva 2016
Cartuxa Tinto Reserva 2016Regular price Regular Price: $36.99 Sale price
Your Price: $31.97
The 2015 Reserva Cartuxa is a 70/30 blend of Alicante Bouschet and Trincadeira, aged for 15 months in new French oak. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. Far more elegant and graceful than the regular Tinto, this is equally powerful but not as jammy, not as dense and far fresher. Here, the fruit is expressed better. There is still intensity of flavor, without the same heaviness, without the same stolid demeanor. It's tightly wound and beautifully balanced. This is nicely done.
