A firm backbone of Meyer lemon peel acidity frames this vivid sparkler, enmeshed with rich notes of lightly charred toast and smoked almond, backed by flavors of ripe white cherry and peach fruit. Hints of thyme and anise play on the finish. Xarel-lo, Macabeo, Parellada and Malvasia de Sitges. Drink now through 2025

Juan António Ponce told me 2021 is one of those vintages when you realize in wine you never know everything... He thinks the 2021 Clos Lojen is the most complete vintage ever for this wine, with unusual freshness (despite "normal" parameters like a pH of 3.7 and five grams of acidity) and 12% alcohol. It's intense and has varietal Bobal typicity with good weight. It fermented in 4,500-liter oak vats with 100% full clusters and indigenous yeasts and matured in 4,500-, 10,000- and 15,000-liter French oak vats for six months. This is sharp and austere, with lower alcohol and is more mineral than fruit-driven. Incredible value.

The white 2021 Blanco was produced with a blend of Viura, Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía de Rioja that fermented in oak vats and new French barriques and matured with the lees and two bâtonnages per week in the beginning and later daily for a total of four months. It's balsamic, a little medicinal and aromatic. They keep growing in Garnacha Blanca with very good results. It's light and fresh, with very clean aromas and flavors.

A red with succulent blackberry and walnut undertones that flow to a medium to full body with creamy, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. More refined and integrated than past vintages.
by James Suckling, JS, 2020.
Aged for 14 months in hybrid barrels (American oak staves and French oak heads) followed by 9 months of rounding in the bottle prior to release. 95% Tempranillo, 5% Mazuelo selected from 10 to 20 year-old vines from our long-standing suppliers in the Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa subzones. Sloped plots of calcareous-clay soils with good drainage and sun exposure.
Bodegas LAN’s honesty is embodied in our wines since the winery’s foundation in 1972. Bodegas LAN is full of meaning. The name itself is an acronym based on the initials of each of the three provinces that form the D.O.Ca. Rioja: Logrono (currently part of La Rioja), Alava and Navarra.

"I reviewed these Locations offerings from Dave Phinney of Orin-Swift Cellars last year, who is going against all conventional wisdom of vineyard and vintage dating wines. Terroirists will claim the devil has possessed Phinney, as his offerings from France, Italy and Spain are all blends from different sectors of each country. If you judge wines on how they taste and the degree of pleasure they offer, they are all incredible efforts. The three new cuvees I tasted are among the finest wine values one could hope to find. Moreover, there are 50,000 cases of each, no easy feat given the grapes Phinney has accessed and the quality he has turned out. As of now, Dave Phinney might be my "value winemaker of the year" candidate. P.S. It's too expensive for this report, but I am including it as an hommage to what Dave Phinney has achieved. If there are better wines for under $20 a bottle in the world today, please share that information with The Wine Advocate. These are all remarkable efforts. Kudos to Dave Phinney!"

I was less taken by the oak in the 2020 Altos de la Hoya, produced in a more commercial and mainstream way from ungrafted old Monastrell vines. But there's good fruit and depth here, a medium to full-bodied palate and fine-grained tannins, and the wine has the stuffing and balance to overcome the creamy oak with some more time in bottle. It matured in a mixture of oak vats and barrels for some six to eight months. 200,000 bottles produced.

The four bodegas that comprise Alejandro Fernandez’s wine legacy, and constitute Grupo Pesquera, share a passion for winemaking that has perfected over time. The strong bond to this great winemaker’s homeland is also reflected in the group emblem: the symbolic Archway and Tower of Pesquera de Duero, the characteristic label on his mythical Tinto Pesquera wines. Numerous awards endorse our wines; awards reaped throughout our 40 years of experience in winemaking. It is, without doubt, a dream come true for Alejandro Fernandez whose maxim was always to own a bodega and make fine wines. Today it could be said that reality has surpassed the dream and that Alejandro, his bodegas, and his wines have earned worldwide recognition and appreciation.

This cava, the bubbly of Spain, is straightforward and uncomplicated. It’s dry and fresh, with yeasty, apple flavors and a lacy texture. In case anybody confuses it with a far more exalted sparkling wine, the label will set you straight: Jaume Serra Cristalino is not affiliated with, sponsored by, approved by, endorsed by, or in any way connected to Louis Roederer’s Cristal Champagne or Louis Roederer.
Subtle, leesy aromas of apple, spices, flowers and nuts. Dry, racy and perfumed, with intense ginger and apple flavors complicated by nutty and floral nuances. Finishes quite dry and restrained. Unusually subtle, fresh, clean Cava. - IWC

Limpid, green-tinged yellow. Sharply focused, mineral-driven lemon pith, pear skin and tarragon scents pick up a floral nuance with air. Shows distinct saltiness and sharp focus as well as depth on the palate, offering sappy Meyer lemon, pear and honeycomb flavors and a touch of herbacity. Finishes long and chewy, with the floral and tarragon notes repeating. This wine's intriguing, savory and briny character is pretty wild, and I can vouch for how well it works with raw oysters and clams. In the context of world-class white wines, this one delivers simply amazing value.

A beautiful Crianza with blackberry, lead pencil and graphite, as well as bark. It's medium-bodied with a solid core of fruit and a flavorful finish. Pretty texture.
Sierra Cantabria Crianza is the flagship age-classified Rioja bottling produced by the Eguren family of San Vicente de la Sonsierra. While the family is most well known for their single cru classified bottlings, they produce outstanding ageing classified wines from their estate vineyards in San Vicente. While this category is dominated by blends of purchased fruit sourced from many growers across the entire appellation, the Eguren family are one of the few (if not the only) families in Rioja that produce an estate grown and bottled Crianza from a single village - in this case, San Vicente de la Sonsierra, one of the most respected villages for Tempranillo in Spain.
.
Practicing organic dry farmed viticulture with certain selective biodynamic practices. Vineyards trained as spur-pruned goblet vines as well as high density trellises. Manual work and harvest, with no mechanization whatsoever.
14 months in used French & American oak barrels. Racked every four months. Aging is carried out in subterranean cellars that were carved by the family at the end of the 1990's. Due to the low temperatures and high humidity, the rate of oxidation is reduced allowing the family to work with low levels of SO2.

Mineral-tinged red and blue fruit, spice and lavender aromas show very good clarity and lift. Juicy, sharply focused raspberry, bitter cherry and spicecake flavors deepen and turn sweeter with air. The lively, persistent finish is framed by silky, slow-building tannins that fold smoothly into the wine's sappy red fruit.
92 pts Wine Advocate
The Mediterranean village red 2017 Bellmunt follows the path toward elegance and balance from the 2016. This blend of 60% Garnacha, 30% Cariñena and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the youngest vineyards and often from deeper soils, which deliver sweet and fresh fruit-driven reds. Each plot ferments separately in stainless steel with natural yeasts, and malolactic is carried out in the underground concrete pools, after which the wines are blended and matured in concrete (30%) and the rest in 1,500- and 3,000-liter oak vats. It's juicy and has very fine tannins that provide a silky texture, nice balance and a fresh finish.

Opaque ruby. Spice-accented dark berries, mocha, cola and pungent flowers on the highly perfumed nose. Appealingly sweet black and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors become livelier and pick up a hint of vanilla with air. Juan António Ponce compared the white 2021 Reto with the 2013 and 2018, to him the best vintage of this wine so far. It was produced with the local Albilla grape, not to be confused with the Albillo from other regions, a grape that can transmit an incredible sense of freshness in a warm place like Manchuela. They now have new vineyards that they planted in the village of Villanueva de la Jara that ripen up to 15 days later and deliver vibrant wines with a more pungent saline sensation and an electric mouthfeel. This 12.5% alcohol wine has a pH of 3.15 and 6.2 grams of acidity (measured in tartaric acid per liter of wine). This is sharp and austere, mineral and electric when young, with an intense salinity and a vibrant and electric finish. Unbelievable for the price. With the experience of previous vintages, this should develop tremendously in bottle.

The entry-level red El Triángulo Balbaína is now a village wine from three different vineyards, of which I tasted two vintages, the older of the two was the 2019 El Triángulo. It was made with Tintilla grapes from Balbaína, Corchuelo and Carrascal, and they look for the expression of the variety, which is very sensitive to Brett and hard to handle. The wine is balsamic and spicy (peppery) but from the variety, not from the oak, which is very mild (the wine matured in neutral barrels for five months and a further 15 months in tank). It has good ripeness (14%) and a round palate with fine tannins and mellow acidity. 15,000 bottles produced.

Pedro Peciña makes this young wine in a traditional unoaked style, although he destems the grapes before fermentation. It's a lot of wine for the price, made from Tempranillo with 5% Garnacha and Graciano and oozing plum and black cherry flavours. Wonderfully vibrant, sappy and alive.
“The 2020 regular bottling of Rioja from Señorío de P. Peciña is a lovely wine, offering up plenty of nicely ripe fruit and a fine underpinning of soil tones. The bouquet wafts from the glass in a mix of black cherries, cigar wrapper, Rioja spice tones, a nice touch of soil and just a whisper of American oak. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied, focused and generous at the core, with good mineral drive and grip, moderate tannins and a long, juicy and very wellbalanced finish. This is really good for an entry level bottling! 2022-2040.” - John Gilman
Organic. 95% Tempranillo, 3% Graciano, 2% Garnacha. All estate vineyards around the San Vicente area of Rioja Alta. The grapes used for this wine are from the youngest vines of the estate which average from 15-25 years in age. Those vineyards are named Finca la Veguilla and Finca Valseca. Aged in stainless steel with racking to another tank at 6 months. No oak aging. The wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered. They are also not cold stabalized.
