Mallea GSM Santa Barbara County 2021
Your Price: $20.97
Save $4.02
Available: 29
Sustainably farmed Grenache 44%, Syrah 42%, Mourvedre 14% from four vineyard sites in Los Olivos and the greater Santa Ynez Valley - Rolling Vines, Bernat, Coteaux de Clair, and TTT Roblar. The Syrah and Grenache are fermented partly with whole clusters, while the Mourvedre is 100% destemmed. Fermentation is with native yeasts in open-top oak tanks. The wine is matured for 14 months in neutral barrique and bottled without fining or filtration.
Mallea is a collaboration between viticulturist Erik Mallea (director of viticulture at Sanford & Benedict and a co-founder of Willett-Mallea Farming) and winemaker Justin Willett (of Tyler Winery and Lieu-Dit Winery). After working together in various capacities for over a decade, Erik and Justin have started this exciting new project to highlight Santa Barbara County’s potential with Rhône grape varieties. They are farming four small vineyard sites clustered around Los Olivos in the Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara.
Third place was a nice surprise because it is a brand new wine on the scene, Mallea GSM Santa Barbara County 2021. This is a traditional Rhone blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mouvedre (GSM) but from Santa Barbara County California. The pedigree of the guys behind it is first-rate but what impressed us was the juice in the bottle! If you enjoy Cotes du Rhone or Southern French reds you are going to love Mallea. This is a wine of subtlety and not as flamboyant as our number two wine. Clearly, the wine is masterfully blended as each component adds complexity, and yet the wine is seamless on the palate. Fresh jovial fruit dances on the tongue with its lively acidity while pepper and Mediterranean spices come out in the finish. Mallea GSM provides a ton of pleasure for a very reasonable price.
The labels reference Erik Mallea’s Basque heritage, depicting 19th & 20th-century aspen tree carvings by Basque shepherds in the American West. Erik’s father, Joxe Mallea-Olaetxe, is a respected scholar of this cultural tradition.

The 2021 Chianti Classico Berardenga is boisterous and expressive right out of the glass. Dark fruit, earthiness, leather, spice and tobacco convey tons of Castelnuovo Berardenga character. The 2021 keeps getting better in the glass. It's a super-classic example of the house style and a wine readers should consider buying by the case. The Berardenga bottling can be a bit wild, but in 2021 has an added touch of sophistication that is undeniable.

Taut and vibrant, with a steely core of acidity and tannins that drives the flavors of raspberry, cranberry and dusky spices toward the firm finish. Best from 2025 through 2031
93 points Wine Advocate
The 2022 Pinot Noir Estate is bursting with strawberry, raspberry and orange peel aromas, and with time it reveals touches of cinnamon, bitters and wildflowers. The light-bodied palate is finely astringent and refreshing with complex, bitters-laced flavors and a long, spicy finish.
93 points Vinous
More savory than sweet, the 2022 Pinot Noir Estate wafts up from the glass with a blend of shaved cedar, rose, ground cloves and dried black cherries. This is lifted and refined with juicy acidity and crisp red fruits, taking on a crunchy, tart cranberry concentration toward the close. Well-formed tannins frame the finish as violet inner florals resonate throughout. This is not only a spectacular entry point to the Bethel Heights style, it's also a fantastic value.

David Trousselle Hautes Cotes de Beaune En Cre Bourgogne Rouge 2023
Your Price: $26.97

Pure elegance in the glass, displaying a transparent strawberry hue. While shy at first, with some time open the wine unveils itself like a flower in the morning sunlight. Lively acidity gives structure and lift making this a lovely accompaniment to food. Bravo.
This delicate expression of Pinot Noir embodies what Burgundy is all about, subtlety and sense of place. This red kept giving more and more as I kept going back to it over several days. This is a beautiful Pinot Noir to enjoy now or to lay down for future consumption.
David Trousselle is a tiny producer in the Hautes Cotes de Beaune. While this appellation is quite vast, his vineyards are extremely well located, nestled in a valley between St Aubin and St Romain. His vinification is quite simple. Grapes are hand harvested, and brought to the cellar where they are sorted prior to fermentation. Reds are de-stemmed, and then given a very gentle maceration/fermentation of 15-20 days and raised in barrel (minimal new wood is used,10-20% max).
Trouselle’s wines are not only beautifully rendered and amazing values, but they are also a glimpse into the future of Burgundy where overachieving producers can shine making wine in under-appreciated regions.

Organically farmed Syrah from the lieu-dit "Les Picheres", less than 2km from the vines of Domaine Alain Graillot in Crozes Hermitage. Vinified with thirty percent whole cluster, semi carbonic maceration, and aged in old neutral barrels from Domaine de la Romanee-Conti.
The bouquet is enchanting, a dazzling display of white flowers, bramble fruit, and a slight note of baking spice. The fruit is lush and plush and feels incredible on the palate (semi-carbonic maceration at play). The finish is silky smooth showing great balance and drinkability. Equis is a joyful, playful wine that doesn't take itself too seriously and yet presents enough layers to keep the most classic plates engaged. This is a crowd pleaser for sure!

Antonio Madeira Dao Vinhas Vellas Tinto 2021
Your Price: $28.97
Save $5.02
Available: 10
93 points Wine Advocate
The old-vine red 2021 Vinhas Velhas Tinto comes from different plots of mixed varieties, 75% of them Baga, Jaen and Tinta Amarela and the rest some 20 old varieties, some almost lost, Marufo, Tinta Pinheira, Negro Mouro, Tinta Carvalha, Bastardo, Alfrocheiro, Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet and many others. The fermentation was inspired by Henri Jayer, a cold soak and a soft vinification, he calls an infusion. It matured in 225-, 400-, 500- and 600-liter oak barrels for 18 months. It has 13.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.69 and 6.01 grams of acidity. Madeira told me that the search is "for a wine with intense flavors, depth, mineral, fresh and with salivating saltiness, a wine for the table." In 2021, the wines have lower alcohol, and somehow, this wine feels a little more marked by the oak despite the fact that the oak was all used. It has fine tannins and good freshness, very tasty flavors and a fine thread. 7,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2023.
António Madeira is one of the leading quality producers in Dão despite being quite young in the regions. He came back from France and established his operation in Dão in 2010. He has seven hectares of vines spread over 20 different plots, five of them old—50 to 130 years of age—in the villages of Santa Marinha, São Martinho, Paços da Serra, Vales and Vodra e Pinhanços. He works biodynamically but has no certification. The wines are all fermented with indigenous yeasts, with no oenological products and minimal sulfur. He now produces 60,000 bottles—up from 30,000—since he enlarged the winery in 2021, and he grew with entry-level wines from purchased wines. This is the first time his wines have been tasted and reviewed by The Wine Advocate, and it was certainly the coup de coeur in this article. The vintage seems to have a big impact in the quality of the wines, and the ones from 2021 were clearly better than the ones from 2020 and 2022.

Marietta Cellars Nadi Wirz Vineyard Riesling 2021

Your Price: $23.97
Save $3.02
Available: 9
The 2021 Dry Riesling Wirz Vineyard comes from some of the oldest Riesling vines in California; the head-pruned, dry-farmed vines were planted in 1952 in Cienega Valley on limestone. It's spicy, delicious and hard to put down, opening with gregarious scents of white peach, candle smoke, lime, biscuit and loads of floral perfume. The light-bodied palate is dry and shimmery, balancing racy acidity with creamy citrus fruit and flinty undertones, and it has a long, spicy finish. 800 cases were made.
92 points Vinous
The 2021 Dry Riesling Nadi Wirz Vineyard is, as the name states, dry. It offers terrific tension and plenty of cut. The lack of sweetness results in an especially taut Riesling. Hints of green apple, slate, crushed rocks, petrol and white flowers linger. This is such a vivid and expressive wine."-

A stunning single-vineyard dry riesling with apricot and mango aromas plus a wonderful harmony of ripeness and freshness on the generous and concentrated palate. The fine tannins and mineral acidity at the finish support this beautifully. So much apricot character and citrusy freshness at the very long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
93+ points Wine Advocate
From 45+-year-old vines on yellow colored sandstone soils, the 2021 Bürgergarten Riesling VDP. Erste Lage reveals dense and fully ripe fruit with clear, refreshingly mineral, lemon and herbal notes. It is pretty stony on the nose and even with iodine notes. Full-bodied, lush and crystalline on the palate, this is an elegant and balanced dry Riesling with fine mineral grip and acidity. The finish is long, intense and powerful yet also fine and elegant and provided with stimulating salinity and finesse. This is a classic from a cool vintage and stylistically reminiscent of Rieslings from the 1990s (yet not from Catoir, a style on its own at that time). 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork stopper. Tasted in December 2022.

The grapes are picked ripe when they have full flavor, so the wine is tasty and ripe, round and lush, which is the house style here. Focused zippy acidity balances the flavors of pear, herbs, peach and apple.
A field blend of Treixadura, Albariño, Godello, Lado, Verdello, Torrontés and others sourced from O Forcadal, a parcel planted in 1910 in the village of Gomariz on clay with blue and red schist (Ribeiro zone, without appellation). Macerated on the skins for 3 hours before pressing. Fermented and raised 8 months in neutral 500-700L barrique.
‘Heaven and Hell’ is both a reference to the ‘good angels’ of the vines in the ‘infernal’ heat of the summer, and X-L Sebio’s metalhead tribute to Black Sabbath’s track of the same name

The new young red 2021 El Predilecto recovers Predilecto, which was a historic brand of the house, a wine with less aging than the rest and more fruity character. In this case, they want it to show the fruit expression of the vineyard without oak. They call it the new old concept in Rioja, what the wines used to be before the arrival of the French, pure fruit. It's a blend of 65% Garnacha from Cárdenas and Cordovín and 35% Tempranillo from Samaniego that fermented destemmed but uncrushed (so not exactly a carbonic maceration) with clean and fresh aromas and flavors. It's ripe and hedonistic, with 14.5% alcohol and good freshness. It matured in concrete for five months.
