We had fifty wines as contenders for our Wine of the Year this year, but only one can come out on top. Domaine Vincent Paris wowed us with his Les Cotes Saint Joseph and it was the clear winner. The first thing you will notice is the elegant profile in the glass, this is clearly not Syrah from southern France. This Saint Joseph is a wine of subtlety, layered nuance, and not a fruit bomb you might experience from this varietal in other parts of the world. For example, the alcohol is only 12.5% which is so integrated that you don’t even notice it. As the wine lingered in our glasses the traditional notes of northern Rhone Syrah unveiled themselves, showcasing garrigue and a savory animal fat component. On the palate, the wine builds and builds displaying pretty blackberry and cherry fruit with some white pepper intertwined. The finish is stoney and a bit rustic which adds so much charm to this very drinkable Saint Joseph.
"I like to drink this wine young, with fruit and freshness, but it can also be kept for around 10 years." - Vincent Paris
We absolutely adored this wine and we believe you will too! Domaine Vincent Paris’ wines have adorned our shelves many times over the years and we are proud to promote his 2022 Les Cotes aint Joseph. Enjoy!
Organic. 100% Syrah from 10 and 20 year old vines in Granitic soils at 300m in elevation. Prunes to only four bunches of grapes per vine (the norm is between five and seven) which concentrates the vines' growing power and cuts down on the need for green harvests. Ferments at low temps, vinfied 2/3 in barrel and 1/3 in tank. Aged in oak barrels for up to 12 months. Only 580-650 cases produced annually.

Moving to the reds, the 2020 Vacqueyras Les Hauts De La Ponche is 50% Grenache and 25% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre. It actually reminds me of a Pomerol with its red and blue fruits as well as bouquet garni, damp earth, and floral nuances. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, I love its balance, and it has silky tannins and remarkable purity of fruit. Drink bottles over the coming 7-8 years.

What does Northern Rhone Syrah taste like? This, it tastes like this! No Grenache blended in here, this is 100% Syrah planted on Granite soils right outside Saint Joseph. The wine starts with classic garrigue aromatics, soft texture, black currants, and a gritty stone-driven finish. This is an exceptional daily drinker for those with a traditional palate. No oak, six months in stainless steel, and perfectly integrated alcohol (12.5% abv). Wow!

Shimmering ruby. Expressive, spice-accented red and dark berry aromas are complemented by suggestions of olive, espresso and candied flowers. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering gently sweet cherry and cassis flavors that deepen through the back half. Finishes very long, spicy and smooth, with even tannins lending final grip.
92-93 points James Suckling
A charismatic Crozes-Hermitage with tons of black-plum fruit, as well as hot-asphalt and cocoa-powder notes. This is remarkably open for its young age, in spite of the ample structure. Has a bold and tightly knit tannin structure, but should be drinkable from release, thanks to the forthright fruit that is very present at the long, moderately dry finish. From biodynamically grown grapes.

100% Roussanne from sand and pebbles soil. Aged six months in stainless steel tanks. 12.5% abv.
Domaine les 4 Vents is owned and operated by Lucie Fourel and her sister, Nancy Cellier. Lucie is a young vigneronne, who in 2006 took over 3.5 hectares in Crozes-Hermitage from her parents with the idea of making wines from her family’s vineyards under her own label. In 2015, Lucie and Nancy inherited the remaining 6.5 hectares from their parents, bringing the domain to its current size of 10 hectares.
Before returning to the family estate, Lucie spent a few years as an apprentice with different wineries in the Rhone Valley during which time she developed her philosophy and practices for organic and bio-dynamic farming and natural vinification. Domaine Les 4 Vents has both organic and bio-dynamic certifications. Lucie does not use any sulfur during the winemaking process; only after bottling does she add a minimal dose. The wines are fermented using only indigenous yeasts.

Vivid ruby. A highly fragrant bouquet evokes candied red fruits, smoky minerals and lavender; a spicy nuance builds as the wine opens up. Sappy and penetrating on the palate, juicy raspberry, cherry and floral pastille flavors show good heft, seamless texture and real energy. It finishes spicy and impressively long, with sneaky tannins adding a final grip. This is shaping up to be a highly impressive entry-level bottling, which is not surprising given that this is the only Gigondas that will be bottled this year, so all the juice from the Louisiane and Souteyrades is going into this wine. Get it, lots of it, if you can. Raised in neutral, 50 hectoliter oak.
91-93 points Jeb Dunnuck
The 2021 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes is a normal blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre that's from older vines around the estate, on the lower plateau of Gigondas. A pure, pretty, elegant wine, its medium purple hue is followed by notions of darker berries, violets, and ground pepper. It's balanced, has fine tannins, and is just another fresher, pretty 2021 that will drink nicely in its youth.

The 2015 Saint Joseph Domaine de la Croix des Vignes is more tannic than the 2016 but not better. Dry cedary notes frame cherry fruit in the medium to full-bodied wine that will require a couple of years in the cellar to show its best.

100% Grenache from 50-55 year old vines. This vineyard is just east of Chateauneuf-du-Pape and across the A7 highway; this is a top Côtes-du-Rhône vineyard, with red clay and rocky galets soil. (Another famous wine from this area is the Coudoulet de Beaucastel Côtes-du-Rhône, considered to be a baby Beaucastel.) Cristia's version is top of the line - rich and concentrated, it is more than you would expect from a Côtes-du-Rhône, aged half in cement and half in one to three year-old barrels for 9 months. Certified organic.

This deep and rich Hermitage, from a family run operation, displays smoked cherry and berry plus dark roasted coffee, iron and red meat on the nose.? On the palate the wine is exceptionally chewy, with cassis, orange rind, and chocolate notes backed by bacon, iron and smoke tones. Excellent acidity and density make this is well-structured Hermitage worthy of additional aging to fully reveal itself.? Decant for at least an hour to serve now. - PJ
