The 2021 Rosso Canavese is a gorgeous, fresh red Nebbiol/Barbera blend to drink now and over the next few years. Rose petal, sweet red berry fruit, cedar, pipe tobacco and dried herbs are beautifully delineated. All the savory and mineral energy of this Alpine district comes alive in an accessible, entry-level offering that can be enjoyed with minimal fanfare. What a delight this is.
The Ferrando family has produced and traded wine for five generations. Ferrando Vini was founded in 1890 by Giuseppe Ferrando, who moved to Ivrea from Acqui to introduce the wines of Piedmont into the neighbouring region of Valle d’Aosta. Giuseppe’s son Luigi then expanded and developed the winemaking business. In 1957, Giuseppe Ferrando junior, the founder’s grandson, began production of one of the rarest wines obtained from the Nebbiolo variety: Carema, named after a small town in northern Piedmont, on the border with Valle d’Aosta. Here, in 1964, the Ferrando family built cellars for the production and ageing of this unique "mountain Barolo" (D.O.C. since 1967). In the early Eighties, Giuseppe’s son Luigi took over the company, which is currently owned by his son Roberto. The company’s creativity and inventiveness have been faithfully passed on through the generations, along with a steady commitment to quality.
Produced predominantly from Nebbiolo with roughly 30% Barbera and a touch of a local variety known as "Neretta" (the little black), this lovely red wine, vinified in stainless steel and bottled 12 to 15 months after harvest, is full of wild berries (notably strawberry and raspberry), spice and a touch of warm earthiness. The tannins are delicate and fine which enables this wine to be consumed with pleasure in its youth. As always with Nebbiolo-based wines, harvest occurs usually in the early to mid parts of October.

Vespolina usually plays the primary supporting role to the great Nebbiolo-based wines of the Alto Piemonte, however, here you have a 100% expression of the varietal. Rovellotti’s Vespolina hails from a organic 0.4 hectare plot in the Ronco al Maso vineyard, with full southern exposure in the commune of Ghemme. The grapes are harvested in the third week of September. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel to preserve the zesty, fresh, wild berry fruit of the grape, with an eight day maceration on the skins, giving the wine a fine and distinct tannic structure. The wine then spends three months in botti, and is bottled the spring following harvest. Decant to soften the tannins and enjoy with a slight chill! (Rosenthal Merchant Import)

The 2019 Barolo Ginestra Vigna del Gris is another terrific wine from Conterno-Fantino. Crushed flowers, cedar, pipe tobacco, mint, dried flowersand worn in leather give the 2019 striking aromatic presence. Here, too, Fabio Conterno has done a terrific jobin taming the Monforte tannins. The Gris never has the completeness of the other Crus, but in 2019 it is positively striking. I would drink this ahead of the other 2019s. Drinking Window 2024-2034
I was blown away by the wines I tasted at Conterno-Fantino. The 2019s are nuanced transparent and wonderfully expressive of place. In other words everything Barolo should be. Everything starts in the vineyard which has always been evident here. In recent years Fabio Fantino has refined that approach giving the wines a level of precision that is impossible to miss. The 2019s spent 15-18 days on the skins far longer than a decade ago and were aged in a combination of barrique and 25hL casks. The 2019s are simply stellar.

The 2019 Colline Novaresi Spanna Cuvée Bernardo Vallana is gorgeous. It presents a bit more mid-palate sweetness and generosity than many of these wines, which only adds to its considerable appeal. Sweet red cherry, kirsch, rose petal, cinnamon and blood orange build nicely in the glass, leading to a finish marked by lovely delineation and class.

The 2020 Barbaresco Pajorè is a textbook wine from this site. A wine of depth and stature the Pajorè is so impressive even just bottled. Dark cherry plum lavender spice and menthol race across the palate as the 2020 shows off its obvious pedigree. Time in the glass brings out a whole range of spice balsamic-infused nuances that build into the palate-staining finish. The 2020 is shaping up to be truly magnificent.

Bright ruby in the glass, Pira's Marenca 2019 shows a bright definition of liquorice stick with vibrant violet and a bergamot-like citrus note. The attack is elegant, refreshing and savoury, but then the palate is dominated by firm, grainy tannins with a dusty yet sweet finish. A greatly powerful wine which deserves attention for its ageing ability.
95 points Jeb Dunnuck
A bit more reserved now, the 2019 Barolo Marenca is ripe with kirsch, tobacco, leather, and anise and is a more meditative wine that will need time to unfurl. It takes on even more power and structure on the palate, with ripe muscular tannins and ample fruit throughout. Full-bodied, with notes of ripe cherry, tea leaf, and turned earth, this one demands time. Drink 2026-2046.

The 2019 Barolo is gorgeous. Dark, ample and super-expressive, the 2019 caresses the palate with generous fruit and fine balance. All the elements are so well put together. Succulent dark cherry, plum, leather, rose petal and spice are nicely amplified in this striking entry-level offering from the Rinaldi family. As is often the case, the straight Barolo punches above its weight.
The Francesco Rinaldi’s normale Barolo displays supple fruit with distant aromas of wild strawberries and cherries. The standard blending formula for this classic Barolo sees fruit from six vineyard parcels, including some from the celebrated Cannubi cru that is most strongly identified with this estate. This vintage awards some added softness and fruitiness that goes a long way to create a long and silky mouthfeel.

Ezio Poggio is a true visionary or, as Italians would say, a personaggio. He is devoted to the revival
of Timorasso, one of Italy’s most dynamic wine grapes. Ezio planted his first vines in 2004,
reestablishing a long-lost growing zone now known as Terre di Libarna along the north face of
the Apennine Mountains, which separate Piedmont from Liguria. In 2011, Ezio successfully
petitioned for official recognition of a new subzone in the southern half of the Tortona Hills called
Terre di Libarna. His daring decision to grow Timorasso at an elevation of nearly 2,000 feet is
without peer, and his unique vision for the grape has yielded white wines of ineffable beauty and
poise. At merely 15 hectares, this small but mighty subzone of the Colli Tortonesi DOC
encompasses the highest elevation growing region for Timorasso. Ezio Poggio is the sole
producer in Terre di Libarna.
Timorasso thrives in white, rocky, calcareous-clay soils, which bear a strong resemblance to the marls, or Marne di Sant’Agata, found in parts of the Langhe. Unlike the Langhe or the Roero, however, very little sand is found in these hills. Terre di Libarna’s significant diurnal temperature swings are mitigated by warm Mediterranean air currents rising up from Liguria. While a relative newcomer to the international scene, the variety has long been esteemed in Piedmont, where Timorasso was often nicknamed "White Barolo" due to its incredible structure and age-worthiness. As early as the 1800s, ampelographers described Timorasso as a noble variety. Leonardo da Vinci, no less, is believed to have been a fan, having included a bottle of white wine known as Timuras and a local cheese from Colli Tortonesi among wedding gifts for Isabella di Aragona.
Characterized by intense, enduring herbal and mineral notes as well as high acidity, Timorasso is mediumto full-bodied with notes of white flowers, subtle stone fruit, and lemon. Due to the presence of an aromatic precursor abbreviated as TDN (trimethyl-dihydronaphthalene) also found in Riesling. Timorasso can yield age-worthy wines that develop great complexity over time. Such bottlings often demonstrate diesel or kerosene notes after several years in bottle. By law, Timorasso cannot be labeled under the Colli Tortonesi appellation if the wine has not rested on the lees for at least 10 months, a technical requirement befitting a structured, age-worthy white wine like Timorasso. While many Timorasso fans draw parallels to Chenin Blanc for its aromatic profile, texture, and ageability, it is singular among native Italian white varieties.

The 2020 Barbaresco Fausoni takes all the elegance of the 2019 and turns up the dial one more notch. Deep and explosive, the 2020 captures all the best this vintage had to offer. A rush of dark red fruit, blood orange, spice, menthol, salt, lavender and rose petal builds as the 2020 saturates every corner of the palate. Here, too, the balance of fruit, acid and tannin is simply masterful. Antonio Galloni.
95 points Jeb Dunnuck
The darkest-fruited of all the wines presented by Sottimano, the 2020 Barbaresco Fausoni is from 50-year-old vines grown at the lowest elevation of the estate (220 to 240 meters). The wine is generous with aromas of blackberry, lavender, and candied licorice. Full-bodied and ripe with ample tannins, it is expansive with red and black raspberry, tea leaf, and turned soil. It has wonderful depth without being heavy, with a seamless structure. It will benefit from another year in bottle before drinking over the coming 10-15 years. Audrey Frick.

Compared to Bricco delle Viole, Coste di Rose is distinguished by sandstone soils at lower elevations of 340 to 350 meters above sea level. There is a lot of variability in the soils, and as they change, Nebbiolo behaves differently, picking up new aromas and textural qualities along the way. The G.D. Vajra 2019 Barolo Coste di Rose shows a darker core of fruit with dusty earthy tones and campfire ash. The grape skins were quite thick in 2019, meaning that less work was done with submerged cap and other extractive methods. The beauty of this wine is the mouthfeel, which feels rich, tight and silky. Coste di Rose was first made in 2015.
93 points Vinous
The 2019 Barolo Coste di Rose is the most open of the vineyard designates but is not the easygoing Barolo it has often been in the past. Bright acids and veins of supporting tannin give the 2019 its taut rather nervous feel. Crushed red berry fruit mint spice flowers and earthy tones all develop with a bit of time in the glass. There is a bit of nervousness in the tannin that needs to soften but all the elements are nicely balanced.
93+ points Jeb Dunnuck
Taking on a jeweled ruby appearance the 2019 Barolo Coste Di Rose displays a bit more depth in its aromas of raspberry pure cherry and sweet floral perfume. Revealing a lovely fine tannin structure on the palate it is an approachable red with a gentle arch to its notes of sandy soil and crushed stones as well as its soft texture on the finish. This is an elegant wine with a lot of charm to drink now or over the next 10 to 15 years. The G.D. Vajra estate is based within the commune of Barolo with the entire family contributing and Giuseppe and Aldo Vajra at the helm of the winemaking responsibilities. Giuseppe who took more of a leadership role in 2008 has been instrumental in continuing to develop the family estate while Isidoro Vajra leads in vineyard management. Most recently they have completed the expansion of their cellar space and offices. They are also now releasing their wines a touch later to allow for additional time in bottle to soften any harsh edges. As of the 2019 vintage both the G.D. Vajra and Luigi Baudana estates are certified organic.
