The 2021 Sauvage Vineyard Pinot Noir is supremely pretty. It's elegant and fine and still powerful, thanks to the Bannockburn area; however, the wine itself shows rose petals and spring flowers, graphite and pencil lead, white pepper and tapenade. Svelte and sleek, this is composed and detailed and so, so good. I am (mostly) resisting hyperbole and adverbs here. This is a standout wine from a superstar producer?an asset for the region and indeed the country (and the New World in general). 13.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

The 2021 landed at #4 on The Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2024 but unfortunately it is sold out. The 2022 vintage is now in stock and is just as good!

Licorice root and alder smoke flavors check in on the finish as the fruit pumps through, ending with a flash of violet. Hard to resist now, but this has some development ahead. The 2022 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese #11 just shyly speaks of white peach compote on the nose, nothing more. The palate is clear-cut. It flashes a steely slate tone before mollifying it with riper fruit and aromatic citrus, so you are undoubtedly aware of its natural colors. This is stone and poise, depth and salty slate, adorning its essential, stony nature with white peach, ripe, expressive tangerine and a fillip of zesty spice on the finish. Light, restrained and elegant. (Medium)

Barrel sample. A big, firm and hard wine, with solid fruits, layers of dry tannin and great power. There's an intensity to this wine with acidity adding to the complexity and structure.

Clos Puy Arnaud is nearly always a seriously made as well as potentially long-lived offering, as evidenced by the 2005. This blend of 60% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, and Carmenere boasts a saturated blue/purple color in addition to a sweet nose of black raspberries, cranberries, crushed rocks, and background wood. Displaying terrific old vine intensity, it hits the palate with a rush of fruit, glycerin, and tannin. With good structure, purity, and potential, it will require 2-3 years to settle down, and should last for 15 or more years. - WA(90-92)
