This is a very satisfying Syrah for a rather stunning price. Lush and generous aromas of baked berry, hot spice cake and a touch of crushed rock show on the nose. The palate is brooding in cassis, boysenberry pudding and baking spice flavors, framed by impressively deep tannins. Best Buy.

Bright yellow. Lovely nose melds lemon, menthol, dried herbs, lichee and ginger. Then almost surprisingly round, sweet and large-scaled in the mouth; quite full for Torront??s but also vibrant thanks to its healthy acidity (reportedly 6.7 grams per liter). A turpenic resiny quality is nicely countered by bright citricity and a floral note. This seriously palate-saturating Torront??s finishes long and outsized, with a slightly phenolic character. A rather extreme style from high-altitude vines (up to 7,500 feet) but it works. (made entirely in stainless steel)

The biggest volume of the winery is the 2021 Ultreia Saint Jacques, which represents some 170,000 bottles, and according to RaUl PErez, it's the most difficult wine to make here. They now work a lot to produce this wine, a blend of 11 wines selected from the 17 they made. It's a wine that represents Bierzo and is from a year when they used more grapes from sandy soils. It has 13.16% alcohol and a pH of 3.66; it's serious and restrained but juicy and easy to drink. Seventy percent of the wine matured in barrel and the rest in troncoconic oak vats.

Domaine Gonzague Maurice has produced a lovely Lalande de Pomerol from the grand 2020 vintage named Le Pavillon de Saint Jacques. We were very impressed with how bright and cheerful this was, perhaps due to only cement tank used for fermentation and maturing. No oak barrels here, just pure organically grown fruit. The wine also displays some traditional notes of cedar and garrigue which must be the 20% of Cabernet Franc in the cepage.

This is a no-brainer for all red wine drinkers, California and French wine drinkers alike. I can?€?t imagine someone disliking this, but what do I know? Give this a shot, it just might become your new ?€?house?€? wine.

Triton Tinta de Toro is a youthful expression of the oldest clone of Tempranillo in Spain - indigenous to the only Spanish D.O. that resisted phylloxera. During the Middle Ages, Toro was Spain's most famous red winemaking region, and was mentioned in literature by Alfonso IX (King of Leon, 12th c.), Juan Ruiz the Archpriest of Hita, Quevedo, Luis de Gongora, and Miguel de Cervantes. These wines also accompanied Spanish explorers to the new world. D.O. Toro was resuscitated in 1997 by Bodega Numanthia-Termes, founded by Jorge Ordonez and the Eguren family.

The 2019 Rioja Vina Alberdi Reserva from La Rioja Alta is made entirely from tempranillo, with the vines at least forty years of age. The wine is aged entirely in small American oak barrels for two years, with the first year in new wood and the second in ôthree wineö barrels. The wine is excellent on both the nose and palate, with the bouquet offering up a complex blend of red and black raspberries, woodsmoke, a touch of spiced meats, chalky soil tones, cloves, nutmeg, a touch of nutskin and a nice mix of smoky and toasted coconutty oak scents. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, focused and complex, with superb depth of fruit, lovely soil inflection and grip, moderate, buried tannins and fine balance on the long, complex and classy finish. This is already very tasty, but it has plenty of well-integrated tannins still on the finish and 74 tucking it away in the cellar for four or five years will result in a more velvety and complex wine.
