This layered sweet wine displays a deep, glossy brown color and is truly indulgent. The nose features raisin, pumpkin pie spice, tobacco leaf and pure sugar cane notes. The palate is rich, expansive and beautifully balanced with honeyed, almost milk chocolatey raisin and smoke flavors. Another village level off-dry, this is sourced from various parcels on the “Grand Cru” Kupp – as such this is more the equivalent of “Senior.” This is a “Grand Cru” wine declassified and sold at village-level pricing. This tends to be a bit deeper and broader-shouldered than the Fass 4; it has more mineral complexity and more depth. TROCKEN-FEINHERB

The wine is called “Senior” as a tribute to Florian’s grandfather who was already in the 1950s famous at least in the Saar Valley for his dry Riesling. So the story goes, he would walk through the cellar and taste all the barrels and then write “Senior” on the cask he wanted for his own drinking. Nine times out of ten, the cask he took was good ole “Fass, or barrel, #6,” sourced from parcels in the western-most part of the Kupp (to the left of the Kern site if you look at the Lauer Grand Cru map, available in the gallery to the left). This is one of the cooler parcels, farthest away from the moderating influence of the Saar River. As it happens, this wine nearly always ferments to a precarious, near-impossible-to-describe balance, in this gray area that is not at all sweet, but not legally dry either. I refer to this style of wine as “dry tasting.” In the old days, “dry” Saar wines often needed a little bit of residual sugar, not to make them taste fruity, but to just counter the ferocious acidities. So this is “Senior” not only named after Florian’s grandfather, but after an old-school style of wines common for the Saar. And while it is fashionable now to do natural ferments, and to seek a more natural balance for Rieslings, the Lauers are famous because they have been doing it for centuries, before it was in vogue.

You just have to taste this wine; while it normally ferments to off dry levels, the wine is dry tasting yet textural with amazing depth and clarity. Don’t worry about how dry or not it is – it’s just delicious. Focus on that.

This simple, assertive sparkler has aromas of citrus, spring blossoms and overripe tropical fruit. The vigorously sparkling, rather muddled palate offers bitter, strawberry, and candied notes. Semi-dry.

Run by the Familia Sanchez Altamirano, the home distillery is in San Baltazar Chichicapam in the hills above the Ocotlan Valley. Pierde Almas Espadin is young, handcrafted mezcal made of 100% agave (agave angustifolia). The bouquet is slightly smoky with hints of aromatic wood and wild flowers. Its effect on the palate is complex with an enduring depth of mouthfeel and flavor. 49%abv

Piedre Almas Tepextate is made from 100% wild agave Tepextate, which takes up to 25 years to mature. The labels are hand-printed on 100% acid-free, handmade paper derived from fibers that are indigenous to the region. It has a savory smoke flavor with earthy undertones. It can be sipped neat, but is most commonly used as a mixer. 40%abv

This is always one of my favorite wines from Pieropan. Fruit comes from an 8.5-hectare cru planted in 1971 on volcanic soils, and the wine is aged in cement vats for a prolonged 15 months. The organic 2023 Soave Classico Calvarino (made with 70% Garganega and 30% Trebbiano di Soave) is a real beauty, with textural heft and an especially silky approach that wraps smoothly over the palate. The bouquet is beautifully complex with hints of honey, apricot and poached apple. I love the intensity and the seamless quality of this mid-weight white. Salty mineral nuances fuel an elegant mouthfeel. Production is 60,000 bottles.

This superb Pineau des Charentes was made from grapes grown in the Cognac region of France, following a 400 years old tradition. Rich and fruity, it should be served well-chilled as an aperitif or dessert wine.

Pierre Ferrand Renegade Barrel is a rare example of double-matured Cognac. Aged in a combination of classic oak casks and chestnut-wood barrels, this is rich with a hint of sweetness.
A limited edition for 2017, 'Renegade Barrel No.2' is made with Pierre Ferrand Cognac that's first aged in oak barrels and then matured in a barrel made from the wood of chestnut tree. Surprisingly, the practice of using chestnut barrels for cognac has been neglected since 1945, and was not included in subsequent Cognac AOC regulation - hence this nectar must be classed as an eau-de-vie de vin and not a cognac.
The unique method of maturation in Chesnut wood barrel marvelously enhances the honeyed, candied fruits and floral notes present in this eau-de-vie. At 47% abv, its is complex, rich, flavourful and intense.

The 2022 Chiesamonti is stellar. Chiesamonti is often marked by slightly coarse tannins. In 2022, intense summer heat amplified the fruit, yielding an especially showy, racy edition of the Chiesamonti. Plush contours wrap around a core of dark red/purplish fruit, blood orange, rose petal, lavender and spice. Readers will have a hard time keeping their hands off this wine. And why should they? This is pure and total seduction.

The primarily floral, sweet nose features aromas of vanilla bean, violets, cherry syrup and macerated blackberries, while a dusting of stoniness provides just enough savory balance. The palate is also sweet, full of berries and whipped cream, before a mocha finish where tannins and acid boost the coffee bitterness.

Straw yellow and with a golden hue in color, the Pol Roger NV Reserve Brut displays a brilliant, perfectly ripe but also fresh, highly elegant and refined fruit aroma on the nose; think of cooked pip fruits like pears and apples, but also quince-confiture and yellow stone fruits, such as apricots and peaches intermixed with vanilla, brioche (pain aux raisins), some nutty flavors and also some white floral notes. On the palate, this medium-bodied Brut is as round (if not pretty sweet) and fruit-driven as it is delicate, pure and very elegant. The mousse is deliciously fine and leads this charming and perfectly balanced fizz to a long, aromatic, stunningly dry and slightly mineral, impressively long finish. This is extremely well done Champagne from equal parts of Pinot Noir, Meunier and Chardonnay sourced in 30 different crus. This Reserve includes 25% of reserve wines and was dosed with nine grams per liter.

The "White Foil" is sourced from top quality vineyards in Montagne de Reims (Pinot Noir), Vallee de al Marne and Petite Valle d'Epernay (Pinot Meunier) and the Cote des Blancs (Chardonnay). Pol Roger "White Foil" is traditionally a blend of equal parts Pinot Noir (body and depth), Pinot Meunier (freshness and vigorous fruit) and Chardonnay (elegance and finesse) and is sourced exclusively from juice from the "cuvee" (first pressing). Each final blend contains a minimum of two vintages with the youngest components being a minimum of three years old. Average dosage for the "White Label" is 8g per liter.
