In 1974, Jean Mourat founded Vignobles Mourat when he purchased Chateau Marie de Fou in Mareuil. Jean's son, Jeremie, took over J. Mourat in 2000, and has been working diligently to raise the profile of his region, the Fiefs Vendeens. Fiefs Vendeens is the westernmost region of the Loire Valley, only 20 km from the Atlantic Ocean and an hour south of Nantes. Because of its proximity to the ocean, the Atlantic is the dominant climactic influence, providing for cold, wet winters, cool and cloudy spring, and warm, humid, sunny summers. J. Mourat's vineyards are located on hillsides overlooking the Lay Valley grown on volcanic and schist soils. Since taking over in 2000, Jeremie has converted to organic farming and working naturally in the cellar while championing the traditions of this ancient winemaking region.
The J. Mourat Blanc Collection is a blend of 50% Chenin Blanc and 50% Chardonnay from 20 year old vines. The grapes are gently pressed, cold settled and the wine is fermented and aged all in stainless steel tanks. Light gold in color, the Blanc Collection displays aromas of green orchard fruits, lanolin and white flowers. On the palate, this medium-bodied wine has a sharp, broad acidity that delivers incredible freshness

The 2023 Fleurie Chapelle de Bois offers a refined bouquet of spice, cranberries, cherries and delicate dried rose and peony petals. On the palate, the medium-to-full-bodied wine maintains a focused and condensed profile, with supple fruit supported by a ripe acidity. A subtle-grained texture imparts the needed dimension, leading to a distinctive finish tinged with a hint of sea salt.
Needing little introduction, the Domaine de la Grand'Cour covers 11.5 hectares, with the majority located in Fleurie (9.7 hectares) and the rest in Brouilly (1.8 hectares). In recent years, Jean-Louis has taken a step back from the day-to-day operations, entrusting his children, Ophélie and Lucas, with leadership. However, upon my arrival at the domaine, I found Jean-Louis driving the tractor in the Chapelle de Bois parcel across the street, so I think it's safe to say that it's only a partial retirement. The domaine farms some of the most revered vineyards in the appellation, all meticulously tended under the Ecocert organic certification since 2009, though their commitment predates formal recognition. In the cellar, the grapes undergo a low-temperature semi-carbonic maceration and ambient yeast fermentation, followed by eight months of aging in a combination of demi-muids, barrels, foudres and tanks, with no added SO2 until bottling. The resulting wines epitomize exceptional purity and are easy to appreciate in their youth, while possessing the structural integrity to evolve gracefully over the years. In 2023, similar to 2022, the family decided to pick their fruit earlier than usual and shorten the vinification length to preserve freshness and elegance. JAJA small-batch reposado and is a blend of highland and lowland 100% Agave Azul. It is aged for six months in American Oak barrels. JAJA uses volcanic water sourced from springs at the distillery. It has notes of vanilla, caramel, and oak, with a balance of agave and sweetness. This reposado won a double-gold medal at the San Francisco Spirit Awards in 2019. Gluten free. 40%abv

The Schneider family has been making wine in the Nahe village of Niederhausen since 1575. Today the winery is run by Jakob Schneider Jr. who took over after graduating from Geisenheim and interning at Knoll in Austria?????s Wachau. His wife Laura, sister Monika, and mother Liesel, all manage different parts of the estate.
Over 52 different soil types can be found here, mostly based on volcanic rock and slate. Working as closely as possible to nature in the vineyards, the Schneiders use humus in their very steep vineyards to help absorb and retain water, as well as straw and hay to prevent erosion. Schneider?????s wines maintain an old-world charm while showcasing a stalwart minerality only derived from the amazing terroirs from which they have.
The Melaphyr trocken, is named for a rare type of volcanic rock found in the estate parcels used for this bottling. Without getting too scientific, this is a "porphyritic igneous rock" / Mesozoic basalt. It?????s one of the volcanic soils the central Nahe contains, and it can provide aromas of soursop, lemon-balm, violets and ginger.
