This is an impressive southern French white wine of mostly Grenache Blanc and some Clairette. The wine displays a lovely texture, typical of the region, however has a surprising lift supplied by the perfect amount of acidity. Tropical fruit notes are at the forefront with subtle mineral notes underneath. Delightfully textural on the palate, think honeysuckle, and finishes with a stony character. Soo much to like here at an approachable price!
Looking for a new Fall white wine? Well, look no further than today’s wine it is perfect for this transitional season. Domaine Vaquer Cotes du Roussillon Blanc 2021 is a stunner, and that is coming from a guy who generally doesn’t love white wines from Cotes du Roussillon. The warm Mediterranean climate can produce rich, flabby white wines that lack acidity but apparently not at Domaine Vaquer. This wine shows a beautiful balance between textural tropical and honeysuckle fruit with its lively acidity, which seems to lift the wine off the bottom of the glass!
To be honest, I do not know much about this winery other than it has been around since the early 1900s and focuses on the traditional varietals of the Roussillon (Carignan, Grenache Blanc, Clairette, etc.). I just happened across this gem of a white during a marathon tasting of French wines and it was a show-stopper!
As we are getting into the cooler months this wine is a perfect transition from light, zippy Sauvignon Blancs and Albarinos and those rich Chardonnays we drink over the winter. The leaves are falling, I have my flannel shirt on, and I’m enjoying some pumpkin soup - all I need is a cool glass of Domaine Vaquer Cotes du Roussillon Blanc 2021!
