Barr Hill Gin is the acclaimed partnership of career beekeeper Todd Hardie and distiller Ryan Christiansen. The concept was to combine bees and distilling. Pine notes leap from the liquid when poured. Heavy doses of juniper immediately evident. The juniper top notes dissipate and you're still left with a robust pine-forward juniper, with hints of pine blossom and dried fir needles. On the palate you will immediately notice the viscosity of the spirit. It is luscious and surprisingly robust. There's a touch of real wildflower honey flavor with green leafiness on the mid-palate. For their Tom Cat Gin, Vermont-based Caledonia Spirits takes their Barr Hill Gin and rests it in New American Oak barrels. The gin itself is a rather simple gin whose ingredients work to great effect. It starts with grain neutral spirit. It adds only juniper as a botanical. It is then sweetened with raw honey. That's it. The sweetening invokes an old style of gin known as "Old Tom" wherein gin was sweetened. It is moderately sweet to the palate. With a buckwheat honey flavor, the juniper is creamy and piney. Hints of orange butter, pine blossom, vanilla, butterscotch and toffee all emerge. Tom Cat Gin is rich and unctuous. - The Gin Is In, 5 stars

Produce at it?€?s Chateau de Bonbonnet estate in the Cognac region of France, Citadel is a melange of nineteen botanicals. All juniper is grown on the estate: it is a true chateau-to-bottle gin. Citadelle exudes delicate aromas of fresh flowers highlighted by more assertive citric scents. On the palate, the juniper cedes to spiciness. Nose: Green juniper is front and center. Lemon zest and mandarin aromas highlight the strong citrus here as well. A hint of fennel seed and winter savory lend some depth. But overall, Citadelle Jardin d'Ete smells simply like a citrus-forward gin.

Flavor: The palate is where the melon shines. Yuzu, sour lemon and tangerine early. Mid-palate, pine juniper emerges as well as a pungent, rich hint of Canteloupe and stone fruit. The rich fruit is deepened by an evolving background note of juniper and the bevy of spices. Nutmeg, angelica, cubeb and licorice come to mind?but there is a lot of complexity here.

Ha'Penny is a well-rounded gin with a slightly citrusy floral aroma and a lingering sweetness. It can be consumed neat with a drop of water but is best served with a slice of lemon and sprig of mint with tonic water. Named after the iconic Ha'Penny bridge, the Ha'Penny range features geranium, dandelion, lavender and blackberry, all botanicals which would have been growing in the nearby Phoenix park in Victorian times when the bridge was built.

Hendrick's Neptunia Gin is a limited release that combines the classic cucumber and rose petal notes with what the distiller calls "coastal" botanicals. Hendrick's doesn't specify what these are but they do lend an enhanced palate complexity along with a very smooth citrus finish. 43.4%abv

The nose is delicately spicy with lots of juniper. Green, piney-juniper, fir branch, with a bit of citrus tinged herbal notes beneath it. Absolutely and powerfully classic with a stunning aromatic profile.

Sipped, Hepple Gin begins with white pine needle, melon, lemon zest and lovage. Mid-palate this is a very classic and clean tasting gin. Hints of fennel seed and celery lead into a finish where subtle licorice backs a crisp juniper-forward finish. A hint of lemon comes through on the end as well.

KI NO BI Kyoto Dry Gin is created with Japanese botanicals such as yellow yuzu from the north of Kyoto Prefecture, hinoki wood chips (Japanese cypress), bamboo, gyokuro tea from the Uji region and green sansho (Japanese peppercorn) berries. The nose is rich, with citrus oil notes: lots and lots of lemon, with some bitter orange rind notes underneath it, lending it an almost Chinotto under-note. Deeper, there's a faint terpenic conifer note under it as well.

The palate is absolutely bursting with incredible lemon flavor. Whatever they're doing with the lemon zest, it's evident that they're preserved a great deal of the character. I can most readily compare it to that note you get on a cocktail when you take a whiff of a well-squeeze lemon zest. On the early palate, you get some coriander and juniper, hints of licorice, with faint hints of fennel, ushering in a citrus dominated finish that has some piney low notes, and traditional gin spice. - The Gin is In

Malfy Originale has a very classic style nose. Spice notes are slightly loud with a lot of piney, green and herbaceous juniper right beside it. The only critique might be that the nose has a touch of alcohol, with an ethanol-forward nose.

The slightest tinge of lemon on the tip of the tongue when sipped. Despite that flash, the real star of the early and mid is herbaceous juniper. There's suggestions of tarragon and chervil here.

Towards the end, bitter lemon peel and a slight medicinal spirit character. The finish of Malfy Originale Gin is rather harsh. The astringency and pronounced dryness is a bit overwhelming and can be intense on the palate when sipped neat. - The Gin is In

As you'd expect, the ingredients are sourced from the Mediterranean, with Sicilian pink grapefruit and Italian rhubarb infusing the gin for a full 36 hours, giving it its beautiful pink colour. The choice of grapefruit is key - the Sicilian variety is prized for its deep pink flesh, which is ripened at low temperatures during colder weather.

The hue and flavour of the pink grapefruit may well be front and centre, but it's not an overpowering taste. Produced in Austria but with a Polish name, Monopolowa can trace it’s brand’s origins back to late 18th century Poland . The name means “Monopoly” and refers to the monopoly Polish elites had over the vodka market. After World War II, the Gesslers? an established Austrian distributor and distilling family acquired the rights to the name, but by the late 1990s all Polish connection to the brand disappeared, as the last distilleries in Gdansk still producing products under the brand name ceased operations. It is a potato gin, light in texture with subtle flavors, and botanicals are juniper, orange and lemon peels, coriander, anise, fennel and ginger.
