85% Nebbiolo and 15% Barbera make up this traditional blend. The color of the wine is ruby with hints of garnet. The bouquet is quite expressive displaying a unique eucalyptus note. The body is complex, refined and dominated by fresh red fruits. Delicate notes of wild berry preserves, balsamic, and violets. A terroir driven backbone has hints of forest floor and baking spices. Balanced bright acidity and savory tannins suggest great aging potential. Long, complex finish.
Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts for approximately 22 days in open stainless-steel tanks, followed by continued maceration in closed tanks on the skins for 7-15 days depending on vintage. Racked off the fine lees in mid-December. Aged for twelve months in large 1,500-liter, medium-toast, oval oak barrels followed by 6 months in bottle.

I also tasted the following vintage, the 2018 Juan Gil (silver label), from a cooler and rainier, more continental vintage than the 2017 I tasted next to it. The origin is the same, Monastrell from their own old, non-irrigated vines fermented in stainless steel and matured in French oak barrels for around 12 months. This is the first vintage that is certified organic. There were some challenges, but they resulted in a fresh and balanced wine with integrated oak and a juicy and round palate. They have introduced optical sorting of the grapes, and perhaps that's why there is more precision and purity. They cannot do manual sorting at this price point, but optical sorting seems like a good alternative. 2018 is a more difficult vintage than the 2017, yet this wine is better, juicier and seems to absorb the oak better, with just a smoky touch that reminded me somehow of a Northern Rhone. Really impressive. 312,000 bottles. It was bottled in June 2020.

A richer styled wine (I've compared this cuvée to a Chardonnay from Mark Aubert), the 2020 Novellum has a medium gold hue as well as a rich, powerful bouquet of caramelized lemon, honeyed almonds, candle wax, and toasted bread. Rich, medium to full-bodied, beautifully textured, and balanced, this is another no brainer purchase.

Deep magenta. An intensely perfumed bouquet evokes ripe black raspberry, cherry cola, potpourri, tobacco and exotic spices, plus a smoky mineral flourish. Sweet and broad in the mouth, offering lush red and blue fruit, spicecake, mocha and coconut flavors that firm up on the back half. Finishes extremely long and spicy, with resonating florality, gently chewy tannins and lingering oak spice notes.

Organic. Pale brilliant orange. Mineral-accented red berry, pit fruit and citrus fruit aromas, along with subtle floral and herb flourishes. Juicy and seamless on the palate, offering sharply delineated blood orange and raspberry flavors that deepen on the back half. The mineral quality comes back on the finish, adding nervy cut to lingering red fruit and fennel notes. Drink 2019-2022. (91 points Vinous)
From vines near the eastern coast of Corsica, below the massif of Castagniccia. The proximity of the sea protects the vineyard from excessive drought, while the neighboring mountains (which reach a height of more than 2500 metres) generate cool air at night that refreshes the grapes and allows them to recover from the stress of the daytime heat.
Their winemaking philosophy is straightforward and lends itself to a style that speaks of the place with a clear voice of each grape’s primary characteristics, with little intervention. The fermentations are all natural and the wines are bottled after a short time in vat with sulfites kept to a minimum; it’s easy to feel this deft touch through these wines bursting with pleasure; even her Sciacarello, a thin framed, fresh and aromatic red (often over-sculpted in other cellars) is a darling here with no uncertainty in its naturally sensual aromas.

Bright red. Red cherry and flowers on the perfumed nose; much more fragrant than the 2017 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. Then fresh and juicy, with bright red fruit repeating in the mouth. Finishes long and savory, showcasing notable purity. Outstanding cool-climate Montepulciano of noteworthy refinement. Very, very well done; I'm not sure readers fully realize just how hard it is to obtain a result of this level in a cold-weather environment such as that of Popoli. This success speaks loudly of the capability and talent of owner Leonardo Pinzolo and his Valle Reale technical team

This is the best bargain rosé we have this year! Delicate and pretty with lively fresh fruit notes that will have you thirsting for more. The wineries vineyards are on an island in the middle of the Rhone river, how cool is that? The main varieties are Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Carmenere, and Arinarnoa (a cross between Merlot and Petit Verdot). The rosé harvest undergoes a short skin maceration with complete control of process timing, producing a rosé exclusively from free-run juice.
"Founded in 1927, Domaine Isle Saint Pierre is located on a small island in the Rhone River. It is run today by fourth generation vigneron Julien Henry.
The proximity to the water provides a cooling influence that allows the wines to retain great freshness even in the far south of France, and deep well-draining sedimentary soils comprised of sand and silt.
Because of the terroir and temperature, they are able to grow varietals that thrive in a Continental climate, such as Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and Sauvignon.
In 2018, the estate received the Vignerons Developpement Durable certification in recognition of their commitment to sustainable winegrowing.
Although the Isle Saint Pierre wines come from the very southern stretches of France, they display wonderful freshness and aromatic appeal. At harvest, as soon as the grapes enter the cellar, they are cooled to a temperature below 16°C.
Domaine Isle Saint Pierre is our answer to lively, easy-drinking "bistro-style" wines that are perfect for everyday drinking!" - Importer

The Numanthia estate, located northwest of Madrid in the Toro appellation, encompasses nearly 500 acres of vineyards spread among 200 parcels, with low-yielding old vines ranging from 50 years of age and up. Founded by the Eguren family of Rioja in 1998, the winery helped to put the Toro region on the map in the 2000s, promoting a suave, more modern take on the area’s formerly rustic reds. The quality of Numanthia’s three bottlings, including the more affordable Termes label, haven’t missed a beat since a change of ownership in 2008, when the estate was sold to luxury giant LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. Of the 15 vintages of Termes reviewed by Wine Spectator, 13 have rated 90 points or higher. This is a go-to version of Tinta de Toro (the local version of Tempranillo) for any lover of Spanish wine. 12,500 cases made, 10,000 cases imported.

As with many wines this time, I had two vintages to taste of the Reserva from the Tondonia vineyard, 2009 and 2008, two very different, almost opposite vintages. The 2009 Viña Tondonia Reserva, a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho and 5% each Mazuelo and Graciano, matured in used American oak barrels for six years. It has some toasted character, with ripe fruit, black rather than red, denoting a warm year but more restrained than the Bosconia Reserva from the same vintage. 2009 is a year of ripeness, concentration and tannin; the wines are powerful, but here you see the finesse of Tondonia in comparison to the more rustic Viña Bosconia. 220,000 bottles produced. There is a new organic red, the debut of which is the 2019 Cune Organic, a blend of 60% Garnacha, 30% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano from external suppliers. That's quite an unusual blend for them, as they tend to use more Tempranillo, and it brings a different combination of freshness and power. The grapes were handpicked and fermented separately by variety with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured in used 300-liter oak barrels for six months. I nearly fell off my chair when I put my nose in the glass, as the wine screamed GARNACHA but traditional Garnacha at its floral and herbal best, with the sweet cherry fruit, red licorice and the chalky tannins from the limestone soils. It's balanced, tasty and juicy, truly delicious. The idea is to eventually produce this wine with their own grapes, as they are moving toward organic farming and removed herbicides years ago. They have never released a wine like this or such a young red. Amazing young Garnacha for the by-the-glass market. Bravo!

They own over 600 acres of vineyard property, making them one of the largest family producers on the Right Bank. Their estate centers around the old family home of Château de Ribebon, a magnificent 18th century building that was once a hunting lodge for King Louis XIV, beautifully preserved, on a terrace overlooking the Dordogne River. Chateau de Ribebon is a blend of 70% Merlot 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc.

91 points - Iconic Montalcino producer Castello Banfi leases 42 acres in the Chianti Classico commune of Castellina in Chianti for its Fonte alla Selva label. The estate also has long-term contracts to purchase wines from three to four producers for this Chianti Classico. A selection is made between the lots for the Chianti Classico and the riserva before blending, aging and bottling in Banfi’s cellars in Montalcino. The wine is aged for a total of 12 months, seven to eight in stainless-steel tanks before racking into 6,000- to 9,000-liter oak casks. Banfi has permission to age and bottle its Chianti Classico outside the zone because former winemaker Ezio Rivella grew grapes in Chianti Classico beginning in the early 1980s. The 2019 vintage in Chianti Classico was excellent, with a very long and balanced growing season that resulted in intense wines. 40,000 cases made, 23,000 cases imported. - Bruce Sanderson

The 2019 Chablis Village was tasted both separately and as a blend so that Didier Picq could show the different terroirs: limestone, clay and a third from younger vines on clay-limestone soils (12 different parcels dispersed over 8ha.) There is superb intensity on the nose, featuring red and green apples, pear and a strong oyster shell/marine scent. The palate is nicely poised and full of tension emanating from the limestone terroirs that also lend this Village Cru its persistence on the finish. Classic Chablis from start to finish.
The Domaine of Gilbert Picq et Ses Fils is one of the lovely, small, up-and-coming producers that dot the Chablisienne landscape. Located in the village of Chichee, just to the southeast of Chablis proper, the Picq family has exploited its small parcels of vines for several generations, with father Gilbert now having fully retired and handed over the reigns to his two sons, Didier and Pascal, and his daughter Marilyn Picq. Pascal is in charge of the vineyards for the family, while Didier mans the cellars and makes the wines, with both brothers more than content to leave the office side of the business to Marilyn. The Picq style of Chablis is very classic, with the inimitable expression of minerality that the chardonnay only picks up in these rolling hillside vineyards of the Yonne Valley, coupled to racy acidity and fine depth that comes with low yields, meticulous winemaking and fine parcels of vines.

Organic. The composition is 60% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine is marked by a vibrant ruby/garnet color married to a richly spicy nose with hints of tobacco and coffee in the background; the flavors are dominated by red currant, cassis, and raspberry; the texture is silky and the wine is smooth and generous on the palate; the subtle tannins have grip but are graceful making this wine particularly welcoming over the near term.
The Pueyos follow traditional vinification techniques. After a 3 day cold maceration, fermentation takes place in both cement tanks and stainless steel tanks. Either way, temperatures are closely monitored so the fermentation proceeds at a controlled pace with maximum temperatures reaching 28 degrees Celsius. The “cuvaison” (fermentation + maceration) usually lasts between 15 and 20 days. Closely monitoring the temperature during fermentation helps avoid extracting the harsher, more bitter tannins that can appear if the temperature gets too high. Half of the wine is aged in barrels for 18 months following fermentation. Only 25% new barrels and 25% one-year-old barrels are used each year, to avoid overwhelming the fruit. The second part of the cuvée is aged in cement tanks. The two parts of the wine are ultimately blended, then fined with egg whites before bottling.

The 2020 Morgon Côte du Py represents a blend of six hectares from around the climat, each with its own attributes. It has an intense bouquet of black cherries, black olive and saline notes, all very well defined with wonderful focus. The palate is medium-bodied with silky-smooth tannins, superb mineralité and a harmonious finish featuring black cherries, blueberry, blood orange and citrus fruit, full of nervosité and admirably persistent. Burgaud said that he had been advised to bottle the various plots separately, but I think this blend represents more than the sum of its parts.

Our old friend Chan de Rosas Albarino has returned to us just in time for spring. This was one of our best selling white wines last year and surely will be once again. The wine is delicious, and hard to beat price wise too!
This Albarino displays a pale yellow color with soft green highlights. On the nose one finds aromas of white flowers, green apples, citrus, and hints of baked pears. The wine is fresh with a persistent, round finish. What a delight!
Why drink that same old Sauvignon Blanc when you could be drinking this?!

Expressive and energetic, yet almost weightless, this white breezes across the palate, with lime blossom, seashore, crushed peach and chalky notes, lively and harmonious. Graceful and long. Drink now through 2024. 2,500 cases made, 1,500 cases imported.
