08 Gotham McLaren Vale Shiraz $13.49
Crikey this is one helluva a Shiraz for the money! Cracked black pepper plays with big, jammy plumb fruit. Both notes lead way to a smooth finish, which tells your senses, it's time for another glass. This is a rich, decadent wine in short production. Perfect for hearty barbecue dishes, such as ribs in a bbq sauce or steak fresh from the grill. Fans of Aussie Shiraz need to give this a whirl.
04 Bodegas Frutos Villar "Muruve" Toro Tempranillo $20.99
The wines of Toro are known for their power, but sometimes that power can go to their heads and as a result go to ours as well. Heat equals alcohol, and alcohol blurs fruit, turns tannins into bitter chards, and gives us a headache. And while the Villar is indeed a powerful wine, it's also elegant, and the alcohol, while definitely present, feels well balanced and behaved. There's also a pleasant smokeyness here that lends to a delectable, round finish. This is hearty red, yet one with enough room to play perfectly with grilled meats, especially if that meat happens to be lamb or braised ribs.
08 Domaine Henri Darnat "La Jumalie" Bourgogne Chardonnay $19.99
Love...we fell in absolute love with Darnat's white Burg. Reared in the legendary Chard town of Meursault, La Jumalie captures everything we adore about Chardonnay from Burgundy: Crispness, minerals, acidity, lemon curd, chalk, apples--everything! We're not alone in our passion; check the wine lists of some of the best spots in Paris and you'll find the Darnat name prominently featured. Ecocert certified, Darnat's are pure wines that express terroir, tradition, and honesty. The Jumalie is a wine that brings out the flavors in traditional French cuisine, rather than covering them. Pair with goose, duck, or pheasant and experience the true bliss of French gastro-chemistry. Or, just sip on its own during a hot evening and transport your senses to wine Mecca.
08 Montalbera Grignolino D'Asti $14.99
This perfect summer red shows light, yet lively notes of rose petals, herbs, and strawberry. It's almost like an Italian Gamay, but a whole lot more herbaceous and with that distinctive sour cherry thing Piedmont wines deliver so precisely. This would be a great wine to put a little a chill on and serve with a first course, such as melon and prosciutto, or a nice plate of cured meats and sharp cheese. Fans of dry Brachettos and rustic Lambruscos (like us!) need to give this a whirl.
07 MonTirius "Terres des Aines" Gigondas Grenache Blend $24.99
From the AOC of Gigondas in Cotes du Rhone, comes this blackberry, espresso, smoke driven explosion that reminds us why we look to the Rhone Valley for some of France's biggest, most luxurious reds. This is 'sink your teeth into me' southern Rhone Valley juice. For Chateauneuf fans looking for a similar expression at a much more reasonable price DO NOT THINK TWICE. Biodynamically farmed on only 16 hectares of old vines dating back to 1925, this is both a classic and fulfilling wine that should speak to both fans of traditional expressions as well as those smitten by the grandeur of modern wine styles. Both Ecocert certified organic and Biodynamic by Biodyvin.
07 Bodegas y Vinedos Castro Ventosa Bierzo Mencía $12.99
Many compare Mencia to Cabernet Franc. This is both totally fair, and totally unfair. Yes, like a Cab Franc from Chinon, the Ventosa shows a distinct earthy minerality: blood, iron, and graphite. At the same time, it's lifted by some sweeter notes, most notably violets and brambleberry bushes. Perhaps the best comparison between the two is that both varietals fly beneath the mainstream slurping radar, and that's a shame. We think that Mencia, like CF, is one of the most character driven grapes on the planet, and makes a fantastic pairing for rustic, well-seasoned fare.
08 Manincor Alto Adige Moscato Giallo $19.99
Ok, first things first: Put the word Moscato out of your head. This has nothing in common with the sweet, floral after dinner drink (not that there's anything wrong with it) but is instead a dry, dynamic expression of the Alto Adige terroir. Crushed cloves, anise, grapefruit, cedar, nutmeg...the list goes on and on. Slow, spontaneous fermentation and a natural clarification process really allows the unique character of the Moscato Giallo to enchant you. Try this with food combos that pair the sweet with the savory, like cheese with honey or prosciutto and melon. Unique, unforgettable, and totally addicting.
08 Alovini Basilicata Sangiovese, Aglianico $11.49
From deep down in The Boot comes this fantastic Aglianico/Sangiovese blend. Loads of sour black cherries, high mineral notes, and juicy, juicy fruit. It's got a nice zing in there too; quite a surprise from an area which often makes unpleasantly tannic and roguish wines. Slurp this down with some pasta and you're good to go!
05 Pascal & Nicolas Reverdy Sancerre Vieilles Vignes $17.99
Not your everyday Sancerre. Yes it has the minerals and ocean floor vibrancy we all love Sancerre for, but Reverdy takes your palate to a whole other level. It has a depth and a richer body than you might expect, but its intensity is not a sacrifice for precision or purity. The Reverdy is a true expression of terroir from one of the most respected families in the Loire Valley. Think grilled fish, shelled or otherwise, as the perfect playmate for the Reverdy's salinity.
08 Clar de Castanyer Penedes Xarello $18.99
We've got a wild one here, but one you should absolutely not miss! Fermented in open chestnut casks, this 100% Xarello from Catalonia has that much sought after oxidized character we love. If you dig on the wines from Jura and the whites of Lopez de Heredia (and you should!) then you will go crazy for the Clar de Castanyer. Brimming with minerals, almonds, and brioche, this eastern Spanish scent show is rich yet light. We had it with some cured herring, olive oil, and red peppers, and went gaga for it. Although not for everyone, those who understand this style of winemaking will be rewarded for taking this cult wine home and experimenting with the pairings. Anything involving seafood should work, or even a simple platter of olives and nuts would kill.
07 Ravines Finger Lakes Pinot Noir $19.99
No, your eyes are not deceiving you; this is indeed a Pinot Noir from New York and, yes, it's good. Quite good. The first whiff alone tells you it's Pinot, something hundreds, if not thousands, of other New World Pinots fail to do. Lots of bright red fruit and perfumed soil. And like all good Pinot, the Ravines finds that nice balance between elegance and power. We're not entirely sold on the idea of the Finger Lakes becoming the next It region for PN, but if the other vintners up there start to come close to what Ravines has accomplished here, we might have to change our tune.
07 Gramercy Cellars Walla Walla Valley Syrah $39.99
This is as good as it gets from domestic Syrah: A big, black fruit filled nose; a mouthful of succulent blueberries; plus some smoked meat, orange peel, and bitter chocolate are thrown into the mix just to make things more interesting. Washington State always seems to play second fiddle to its more entrenched southern neighbor, but with wines like this, Oregon better watch its back. The dollar to wine ratio here is just off the charts. Grab some.
06 Heymann-Lowenstein Von Blauen Schiefer Riesling $20.49
The best wines are liquid contradictions: Fruity, yet tart; full bodied, yet refreshing; pure, yet layered. All of these apply to the Heymann-Lowensein, a stunning Riesling we are thrilled to get our hands on. Its slight petrol edge is all honey and yellow raisins, charged by electric acidity. Sweet fruit, tart fruit, and slate all join hands here to create absolute Riesling bliss.
06 Shaw Vineyard Finger Lakes Chardonnay $12.99
09 Gramona "Gessami Blanco"Penedes Muscat Blend $14.99
A Spanish white that drinks like an off-dry German Riesling. Lots of peach flavors, and floral notes as well, but all held together by a tantalizing zip of acidity. Starts out with fruit, but finishes dry. Totally gulpable, and perfect for washing down a cheese course, or even some food with a little heat to it like Thai or Chinese. Also a beautiful wine to spend a long, hot summer day with or to start the dinner party off with an elegant note.
05 Massimi Berucci "Hyperius" IGT Lazio Cesanesse $13.99
A Spanish white that drinks like an off-dry German Riesling. Lots of peach flavors, and floral notes as well, but all held together by a tantalizing zip of acidity. Starts out with fruit, but finishes dry. Totally gulpable, and perfect for washing down a cheese course, or even some food with a little heat to it like Thai or Chinese. Also a beautiful wine to spend a long, hot summer day with or to start the dinner party off with an elegant note.
07 Avignonesi "Rosso" IGT Toscana Sangiovese $13.49
Table wine should be simple wine, but simple should never translate as boring, one-dimensional, or flat. And it should definitely never translate as "cheap"; not "cheap" as in price, but "cheap" as in that cheap-wine taste we've all been punished by at parties and dinners where the host hasn't a clue about quality vino. So yes, the Avignossi is indeed table wine--wine for pasta, wine for bread, wine for Wednesday night--but it is not "cheap". Loads of tart, bright cherries, zippy acidity, and easy going tannins are all apparent upon the first sip and follow through straight to the finish. Perfect pizza wine, or for anything with tomatoes involved. This is great deal wine, not cheap wine.
04 Bodegas Las Orcas "Decenio" Alavesa Crianza $14.49
This classis style Rioja is fueled by lots of things we love: natural yeasts, older oak barriques, un-fined, un-filtered. Just the pure expression of Tempranillo. Lots of bright cherry, raspberry, and spice. Perfect for meat dishes with a little heat to them, or creative barbecue creations. Also great for roasted veggies and anything with a dab of alioli.
07 Fattoria Petrolo "Galatrona" Alavesa Crianza $117.99
98 points, Wine Spectator
October 2009
This has a great color, with fabulous aromas of crushed blackberry, violet, toasty oak and black olive. Full-bodied, with powerful, ripe tannins and amazing flavors of blueberry, dark chocolate and toast. Lasts for minutes on the palate. Reminds me of the 1989 Pétrus. A stunning Merlot. Best after 2012. 1,250 cases made.
01 Valdicava "Madonna del Piano" Brunello di Montalcino Riserva $349.99
Valdicava's fully-saturated, almost black 2001 Brunello di Montalcino is a massively endowed effort packed with opulent layers of jammy dark fruit, licorice, cassis and earth. It offers great length in a richly sumptuous, concentrated style. I must admit this wine's virtually black color is hard to understand but it is difficult for me fault the absolute quality of what is in the glass even if the style is quite atypical. Hard to resist today, it also clearly has the stuffing to drink well to age 20. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2021.
07 Maysara "Jamsheed" Willamette Valley Pinot Noir $24.97
With the whole biodynamic thing really taking hold in France, it's surprising the States has very few, and certainly less notable, producers doing right by the grapes. Meet Moe Montazi, the man behind Maysara, and some say the Nicolas Joly of Oregon! OK, OK, forget hippy-dippy-celeb-status wine; the juice here shines through no matter how it was made. This is an earth driven herbaceous Pinot that captures the mushroom-y accents that fuel the soil of the Van Duzer Corridor; perhaps the most ideal climate in North America for Burgundy-esque PN. And, for those counting, this is indeed Demeter certified biodynamic, which we happen to think is also pretty darn cool.
07 Yannick Amirault "La Coudraye" Bourgueil Cabernet Franc $17.99
Just when we thought we couldn't fall any more in love with Cab Franc from the Bourgueil AOC, we got whacked by the Yanick! What a blessed moment it was when we popped the cork on this fantastic find. It somehow marries all that pencil-leaded, Loire-Valley-barnyard-funk with pretty, lip smacking red fruits. It's fresh and alive yet coated in minerals. Yannick is also our kind of guy: indigenous yeasts, no filteration, and minimal SO2. Perfect for rustic meat dishes, ribs, or advanced bistro fare. Just awesome.
07 Domaine La Soumade Rasteau Grenache Blend $18.49
From Andre Romero, "the King of Rasteau", comes this decadent Rhone Valley treat. But the real beauty here is not the lush black fruit, the smoky cherries, or the spice, but how balanced and integrated they all are. In less skillful hands, these characteristics could border on a barbecue sauce viscosity, which is exactly what happens in many a warm weathered region where the vintners don't have a good handle on things. Not so with Andre, who plays his family's 200 hundred year old vineyard like the proverbial symphony. Power, balance, precision…it's all here and ready for some cream, butter, or bacon fat driven cuisine i.e. French food.
NV Font I Jordana "Reserva" Penedes Cava $17.99
Over the last year, we've uncovered a number of natural wines (i.e. minimal S02, indigenous yeasts, organic grapes etc.) and we're psyched to see that the trend has now crossed over into sparklers as well. This 100% au natural vino has lovely, tight bubbles, toasty brioche notes, and tons of rustic characteristics we love. It takes a long slow fermentation process to produce this wine without the quick and dirty techniques even many fine Champagne houses use, but it's worth it. This is Cava so good, so nuanced, you could even decant it and drink it as a foxy still wine. But hey, bubbles are nice too!
08 Chateau Fontanes "Les Traverses de Fontanes" VdP d'Oc Cabernet Sauvignon $11.99
Take a close look at this bottle. What's the first thing you notice? That's right it's totally clear. No green tint, just pristine glass. That's no accident, but a statement. This is young wine; glorious, glorious young wine, meant to be drunk right this second. OK, you should probably wait until you get home, but this all natural biodynamic Cab Sauv from Pays d'Oc is a beautiful expression of what young wine should be. Plus, it has more character-earth, hay, minerals-than many wines five times its age and price. Just straight up beautiful juice. Drink this by the bucket-load and revel in life's simple pleasures.
08 Camillo Donati Lambrusco $19.99
The Donati is an all-natural Lambrusco that grabbed us by the collar and screamed, 'Drink me!' from the moment its super stylish crown cap was cracked. We took one whiff, and were like, 'hold on, what have we here?' It smells like so many of our favorite natural wines with their unmistakable barnyard accents, minerals, and ultra alive yeasts, but it still has a mouthful of fresh red fruit. This is a wine you want to pour into your biggest glass and throw on your thirst like you would a freezing cold beer or cider.
08 Evening Land Vineyards Willamette Valley Pinot Noir $21.99
If any place in the New World can come close to Burgundian expression , it has to be Oregon's Willamette Valley. Case in point is this stellar Pinot Noir from Evening Land vineyards. This has everything we are looking for from affordable Pinot. Red fruit? Check. Earth? Check. Salivating acidity? It's got that too. This is a straight-up silky Pinot that can stand toe to toe with many a fine wine out of the limestone ridges of the Côte de Beaune.
NV Shaw Vineyard "Keuka Hill Reserve" Finger Lakes $19.99
01 Vina Mayor Ribera del Duero Gran Reserva Tinto Fino $13.49
The Gran Reservas spent 18 months in French oak, some new, followed by 18 months in seasoned American oak. The 2001 Gran Reserva is purple-colored with more primary aromatics including elements of wood smoke, Asian spices, pencil lead, and blackberry. There is enough structure to permit several more years of evolution, excellent depth and breadth of fruit, and a long finish. Give this tasty effort 2-3 years in the cellar and drink it through 2020.
05 Martinez Lacuesta "Ventilla 71" Rioja Tempranillo $25.99
With over a hundred years under their belt, Martinez Lacuesta is a name that is synonymous with Rioja, and have been grabbing tasters by the buds with every vintage. The Ventilla 71 is a beautiful expression of this classic property and merges tradition with modern influence. Its bright red fruit; soft tannins, and vanilla accents were enough to win the hearts and minds of Decanter magazine, who chose it as The Best Reserva Rioja from 2005. We agree, and think its expression falls somewhere between Artadi and Muga Reserva. In other words, big yet elegant.
04 Giuseppe Cortese Rabaja Barbaresco Nebbiolo $49.99
An elegant Barbaresco from a stellar producer who really lets the character of his Nebbiolo shine through unadorned. Lots of rose petals, orange peel, and smoke circulate above the rim of the glass. This is the classic finesse to power ratio that we crave, when we crave Nebbiolo (which is about once a week!) Perfect for richer Italian dishes that lean more to the meaty, earthy side, than the tomato or basil driven feasts of the south. You could hold on to this for a few more years, but honestly, we think it's drinking just beautifully right now.
NV Szigeti "Gruner Veltliner Brut" Burgenland Brut Sparkling Gruner Veltliner $14.99
When's the last time you had a sparkling Gruner Veltliner? That's right, never! Or at least we hadn't until this 'fall in love' sparkler entered our lives. And fall in love we did. Nice round bubbles, lemon accents, and 'set you phasers to stun' acidity. It will work as the perfect aperitif, or substitute for Champagne, but will also pair nicely with cream sauces, cheese plates, or just about any seafood dish. A fantastic find we hope to be able to keep in stock once it builds its fan-base, of which you can consider us firmly a part of.
08 Wimmer-Czerny Fumberg Wagram Gruner Veltliner $13.99
From the sandy soils facing the Danube, comes this 'get out your notebook' Riesling. Nouns, adjectives, and adverbs will be on the tip of your tongue as you sip this delicious juice: Crunchy lime candy, sun slapped peaches, tongue tingling acidity...you get the picture. Part of the reason for the taste explosion is the natural winemaking process employed by Hans Czerny. Ironically, the more hands-off the winemaker, the more his/her signature the wine bears. This is just a delightful bottle of crushed grapes that allows for an almost unlimited list of pairings: seafood, spicy food, cheese, fowl...heck you could even match this up with some steak tacos and experience that wonderful lime/grilled meat combo that makes so many Mexican dishes sing.
07 Prager "Weingut Prager" Wachau Federspiel Riesling $29.97
This description is going to be hard to write without salivating. The Prager is all honey and lime, interlaced by ray-gun acidity and a borderline creamy texture. It seems almost impossible that something with so much heft can also have such bite, but that my friends, is the genius of Riesling. Not too sweet, not too dry, just a beautiful balance between the two. You can thank the marble and chalk terroir as well as the natural fermentation with zero chaptalization for this pure, mouth-watering sensation. Throw it at some spicy food, a cheese plate, or seafood to experience its full depth of expression.
08 Fred Loimer Niederosterreich Kamptal Gruner Veltliner $11.49
Brace yourself for lime, apple, and minerals. All three share space in this groovy little Austrian, which finds the sweet spot between fruit and acidity. Think of a perfectly harvested green apple with its balanced sugar and tart structure, and you'll begin to get an idea of what the Loimer has in store for you. Almost infinitely pairable, this lengthy vino really cries out for a rich seafood dish, butternut squash soup, or a nice stinky cheese plate. If you've never experienced the liveliness and versatility of Gruner, then this is an ideal intro.
09 Ulacia Getariako Txakolina $15.49
Summer is not complete without Txakolina, the crisp, lightly petillant, wine from the Basque Country. Simple yet total refreshment is the name of the game with most Txakolina, but the Ulacia takes this liveliness to whole other level. Notes of lemon, tangy slate, and apples dance among the creamy bubbles created by the all natural fermentation. You simply can not go wrong with this wine except for not having any on hand when the guests show up. Next to fine Champagne, there's almost nothing we'd rather have for an aperatif than the Getariako. And as for seafood? It's a mind-blowing combo. When the earth leans towards the sun, we lean towards the Basque country and do as they do: Drink Txakolina every day! And at only 11% alcohol, why not?
NV Poema Cava Brut Sparkling Viura $8.99
